V-Hawks sweep St. Ambrose

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- The V-Hawks traveled to Davenport on Thursday night to compete in their third game of the CCAC season this year. The V-Hawks earned a sweep over the Bees 25-17, 25-22, 25-23, continuing their unbeaten conference play streak. 

The V-Hawks were led by sophomore Izzy Jahr's 14 kills on 0.367 percentage. Senior Jada Mitchell impressed with eight block assists, and Maddie Connor paved the way for her hitters with 21 assists. Resse Germann wasn't letting anything get past her, putting up an impressive 25 digs in just three sets. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Set one opened with an ace from Maddie Connor to set off a 5-0 run for the V-Hawks. Viterbo held the lead into the middle of the set. St. Ambrose fought back, but the V-Hawks still held the 13-11 lead. Two points from the V-Hawks forced a St. Ambrose timeout. After the timeout, a kill by Hailee Halverson, an ace by Maddie Connor, and two errors from the Bees forced another St. Ambrose timeout. The V-Hawks held the lead through the set, winning 25-17. 
  • The first point for the V-Hawks came from a MaKena Ihle kill in the second set. An early run with an ace from Resse Germann gave the V-Hawks an early 7-3 lead. Viterbo continued to grow their lead through the set until St. Ambrose answered with their own 4-0 run. Viterbo got the ball back and scored on kills by Izzy Jahr and Sadie Treptow. The end of the set had some back and forth, but two kills from Izzy Jahr sealed set two with a 25-22 victory. 
  • Sadie Treptow scored the first kill for the V-Hawks in set three. Viterbo and St. Ambrose had many ties in the beginning of the third set until the Bees came out with a 10-7 lead to force Viterbo into a timeout. St Ambrose kept their lead at the V-Hawks fought back. A kill from Jada Mitchell tied the set at 13-13. Back-to-back kills from Jalen Hinzman secured the V-Hawk lead at 16-15. The two teams found themselves at yet another tie at 23-23. A kill from Izzy Jahr and a kill from Hailee Halverson sealed the deal. The V-Hawks won the set, and the match, 25-23.

The V-Hawks play the #9 ranked McPherson (Kan.) on September 12 at 1 PM at the Saint Ambrose Tournament. They will round off the tournament with two more matches on September 13.
