Viterbo sweeps No. 1 Missouri Baptist
LA CROSSE, Wis. - The No. 9 Viterbo University Women's Volleyball team hosted No. 1 Missouri Baptist at R.W. Beggs Sr. Gymnasium on Friday night. The V-Hawks defeated the defending NAIA Women's Volleyball National Champs, 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-17).
Set one started very back-and-forth until Viterbo was able to pull away after a Miah Garant kill and two points in a row from block assists by Grace Rohde and Mariah Calkins. Missouri Baptist called a timeout at 21-19. After the timeout, two Maya Roberts kills were enough to secure the set win for the V-Hawks.
Sets two and three were favored more towards Viterbo. Early in set two, Kenidi McCabe went on a 6-0 serving run to put the V-Hawks up 13-6. A couple of points later, Cassidy Spies went on a 4-0 serving run herself to put the V-Hawks up 21-8. Set two ended on a Garant slam from setter Lauryn Sobasky. Viterbo had nine early kills in set three to get the 15-5 lead. Missouri Baptist made a push for a comeback after going on a 12-5 run, but Viterbo shut that down to get the 25-17 set three win.
Maya Roberts led the way offensively for the V-Hawks with 12 kills, followed by Garant with nine and Katie Frohmader with eight. Kenzie Winker and Rohde each added seven kills of their own. Sobasky had a team-high 22 assists and Abbey Johnson had 18. Defensively, Adrianna Reinhart led the team in digs with 14 and Calkins tallied four block assists and one solo block.
As a team, Viterbo had 45 kills, while Missouri Baptist had 27, respectively. Viterbo took advantage of Missouri Baptists' .062 hitting percentage, securing their own hitting percentage of .279.
Viterbo Women's Volleyball (7-0) will take the court again right away in the morning, facing No. 3 Midland University at 10:00 am CT.
