V-Hawks Earn Conference-Opener Win, first of Skaar Era

LA CROSSE, Wis. -- The V-Hawk women's basketball team took to the court on Wednesday night to face off against the Trinity Christian Trolls in their first conference matchup of the season. Through 40 minutes of play, the V-Hawks claimed a victory over the Trolls in 71-56 fashion. 

Offensively, the V-Hawks were led by Carly Drew's 16 points. Drew went 8-11 from the field and led the team in assists with four. Closely behind her was Pearla Teko-Folly with 11 points, going 5-8 from the field and 1-1 from the free throw line. Defensively, Gina Stefferud claimed eight rebounds while Pearla Teko-Folly added six rebounds and four blocks. Marley Hughes added three steals to the tally while Shayna Williamson added two. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lauryn Goettl scored first for the V-Hawks, taking the first lead of the game. The V-Hawks went on to score 11 unanswered points, going up 13-2 on a Teko-Folly free throw. The Trolls responded, hitting several threes to bring the score back within two points at 15-13. Chloe Auth earned the last two points for the V-Hawks in the first quarter. 
  • Lauryn Goettle scored first for the V-Hawks again in the second quarter, taking the 19-13 lead. Some scoring from Carly Drew and Nora Tucker helped the V-Hawks hold their six point lead and four more unanswered points from Drew extended the lead to 32-22. Gina Stefferud scored two more to take the 12 point lead, and a Chloe Auth three brough the 15 point lead. The V-Hawks went into halftime with a 39-24 lead. 
  • Out of the half, the V-Hawks continued to extend their lead through the third quarter. 10 unanswered points from the V-Hawks gave them the 53-28 lead. Four points from Kira John gave the V-Hawks a nearly 30 point lead going into the final quarter. 
  • The V-Hawks entered the fourth quarter with a 61-34 lead. Lydia Niederstadt extended that lead immediately with a made jump shot. Gina Stefferud scored four points to extend the lead, and Ashlee Williamson assisted in the V-Hawks effort with a made jump shot. Lydia Niederstadt brought the V-Hawks over the 70 point threshold, and the V-Hawks eventually claimed the 71-56 victory.

The V-Hawks will travel to Illinois to face off against St. Francis in their next conference match. The game is set to begin at 5pm.
