V-Hawks Fall to Raiders in Hard-Fought Battle

LA CROSSE, Wis. -- The V-Hawks hosted the Red Raiders of Northwestern on Tuesday night for their fifth contest of the year. The V-Hawks put up a hard fight, but eventually fell to the Raiders, falling to 0-5 overall. The Raiders improve to 1-0 in their first win of the season. 

The V-Hawks were led both offensively and defensively by Pearla Teko-Folly. Teko-Folly put up 14 points while shooting 50% from the field (7-14). Additionally, she added 11 rebounds in her campaign, seven defensive and four offensive. Close behind her offensively was Shayna Williamson with 11 points and Nora Tucker with ten points and four assists. Defensively, Carly Drew put up seven assists and one steal. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the first quarter, Pearla Teko-Folly scored first for the V-Hawks. A Nora Tucker three pointer put the V-Hawks up 5-2 early in the game. Later in the quarter, the V-Hawks scored nine unanswered points with a three pointer from Shayna Williamson. Lauryn Goettl added four of her own down the stretch, and the V-Hawks finished the first quarter up 21-16. 
  • Marley Hughes scored the first points of the second quarter followed by a couple more from Lauryn Goettl. A pair of jump shots by Pearla Teko-Folly held the lead for the V-Hawks at 29-21. A four-minute scoring drought for both teams held the score at 29-24 for most of the second quarter. A pair of made free throws by Nora Tucker was the last scoring of the second quarter, and the V-Hawks went into halftime up 33-26. 
  • Out of the half, Nora Tucker scored first. The Raiders responded much heavier in the third quarter, going on a 7-0 run early to take the 39-37 lead. A jumper by Kira John brought the score back to a 39-39 tie and a free throw from Abby Ward took the lead back for the V-Hawks. The Raiders put up another 8-0 run, and took the 48-41 lead. The V-Hawks continued to fight, but Northwestern outscored the V-Hawks 31-16 in the third to take the 57-49 lead. 
  • Kira John scored first in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to six. The Raiders then scored nine unanswered points. The V-Hawks attempted to fight back with a late three pointer from Shayna Williamson, but eventually they fell 74-63 in the final. 

UP NEXT 

The V-Hawks will play in an exhibition match on Thursday night. They will return home on Wednesday, November 12th to take on the Trolls of Trinity Christian at 5:30pm.
