V-Hawks struggle on the road

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The V-Hawks traveled to Indiana this past weekend to face off against #8 Saint Francis (Ind.) and Goshen of Indiana. The V-Hawks came away without a win, but they fought through the tough competition. On Friday night, they fell to the top-ranked Saint Francis 86-46. On Saturday, they played a morning match against Goshen and fell 77-63. 

The V-Hawks were led both offensively and defensively this weekend by Pearla Teko-Folly. Teko-Folly led the team in points scored with 25 between the two games. She shot at 75% from the field against Saint Francis and 45.5% from the field against Goshen. Additionally, she added an assist. Defensively, Teko-Folly added 22 rebounds through the two games. On both Friday and Saturday, Teko-Folly earned double-doubles. On friday she scored 12 points with 10 rebounds, and on Saturday she scored 13 points with 12 rebounds. 

In their match against Saint Francis, the V-Hawks scored first on a layup from Pearla Teko-Folly. A three pointer from Nora Tucker and a jump shot from Lauryn Goettl brought the V-Hawks to an early 7-0 lead. The V-Hawks held in tight, going down by two at 13-11. With four minutes left in the first quarter, the V-Hawks didn't score again until one minute into the second quarter when Kira John scored on a jumper. The V-Hawks continued to fight offensively in the second quarter, getting outscored just 17-14 in the second quarter. 

Out of the half, Lauryn Goettl scored the first points for the V-Hawks. Saint Francis scored seven unanswered points until Pearla Teko-Folly earned a layup. Marley Hughes added three points, and Teko-Folly followed up with another layup. Saint Francis responded with a laup of their own, but Nora Tucker responded with the three pointer. The V-Hawks went down by 20 points with two minutes left in the third. Saint Francis went on a 13-0 run over the V-Hawks, extending into the fourth quarter. Carly Drew cut off the run with a three pointer. The V-Hawks did not score again for several minutes, and the team struggled offensively in the fourth quarter, scoring only five points. The V-Hawks fell to Saint Francis 86-46. 

In their match against Goshen, the V-Hawks went down 9-0 early on. Lauryn Goettl's made free throw earned the first point for the V-Hawks. The V-Hawks scored almost exclusively on free throws through the first quarter, with Chloe Auth scoring the last two points of the first for the V-Hawks. Into the second quarter, the V-Hawks were down 20-10. A couple of made free throws from Lauryn Goettl closed the gap followed by a three pointer from Carly Drew and a layup from Pearla Teko-Folly. The V-Hawks were only down 20-17. The V-Hawks continued to fight, eventually taking the lead with three minutes left in the quarter on a layup from Nora Tucker. Shayna Williamson extended the lead for the V-Hawks, the they were up 28-25. Goshen fought back, and the V-Hawks went into halftime down 30-32. 

The V-Hawks hung tight to Goshen, taking the lead back with a layup from Lauryn Goettl. A Marley Hughes three pointer extended the lead to 43-38 with five minutes left in the third. Goshen fought back, but a three pointer from Nora Tucker held a one point lead for the V-Hawks at 46-45. Goshen fought back and took the lead with a minute left in the third. The V-Hawks went into the fourth quarter down 53-49. In the fourth, Goshen immediately extended their lead, going up 60-51 over the V-Hawks. The V-Hawks fought for a comeback, but eventually fell to Goshen 77-63.
