Viterbo Splits Final Home Tri
LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo Men's Volleyball team split with a win and a loss on Saturday afternoon, falling to Calumet College of St. Joseph 3-1 (28-26, 25-13, 27-25, 25-21) and sweeping Maranatha Baptist 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-17). The V-Hawks sit at 4-22 (CCAC 0-7), while the Crimson Wave rise to 4-11 (CCAC 3-4) and the Sabercats fall to 0-20.
Ethan Davis's kill would open the match for the V-Hawks before sending past another to end a four point run by the Crimson Wave. The V-Hawks trailing behind would put Roman Rzeszutko setting up Logan Amdur and Alex Kratzenstein for kills. Letting up another four point run Davis would once again end it.
The V-Hawks looking to claim a set would take the opening kill with Styrk Myhre at the net, Riley Connors attempting to carry momentum with a kill of his own. Falling behind, Kratzenstein would take two last kills before an ace would seal set two for the Crimson Wave.
Davis and Myhre with a strong block early in the third, VU would take a three point run with kills by Davis and Connors, Davis continuing the scoring with an ace. Max Dugan would mix it up with an assist for Davis on the attack but CCSJ would take another set.
In the fourth, Amdur would set up Kratzenstein for the kill quick, though the Crimson Wave would take two three point runs early. Jack Peroz on the serve would take back to back aces, Davis continuing back to backs with a pair of kills. A burst of energy would put the V-Hawks on a five point run with a pair of kills by Connors though the final six points would go to Calumet.
Davis led the V-Hawks with 18 kills, Amdur set up 29 assists, and Dugan took 14 digs. Francis Hauze led the Crimson Wave with 27 kills.
Claiming the opening five Connors would take a pair of aces followed by Noah Diedrich with a kill. The V-Hawks taking another five, Justin Kratzenstein would smash a kill followed by an ace by Peroz. Jake Schradle would claim a set of back to back aces while Diedrich would support with a kill. Viterbo looking to seal set one would set up Garran Wilming for kills supported by an ace by Rzeszutko.
Burton Bosan Jr. swinging for the first kill would set up for Peroz to smack his own kill down. On a seven point run Wilming and Myhre would carry an offensive threat with kill after kill. Peroz carrying out service for the rest of the set would take triple the aces with a kill by Myhre to boost.
Viterbo itching to clinch a sweep would take four rallies with a kill and an ace by Peroz, followed by a kill at the net by Rzeszutko. Schradle with the perfect ball would grab a kill followed by Bosan Jr. with one of his own. The V-Hawks with the end in sight would give Vincent Troung a strong kill with back to back three point runs with a kill by Wilming and a block by Rzeszutko and Peroz.
Wilming led the V-Hawks with nine kills, Rzeszutko tossed up 26 assists eight digs. Yinghao Sun led the Sabercats with three kills.
The V-Hawks return to action Tuesday, March 25 for a rescheduled non-conference matchup with Mount Mercy.
