Three V-Hawks return from NAIA National Meet as All-Americans
GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Viterbo University Track and Field teams sent five representatives to the NAIA National Track and Field Meet in Gulf Shores, Alabama this week. The V-Hawks had a great showing at the meet with three athletes finishing in the top-seven in their events to be named All-Americans.
Bailey Nuutinen kicked things off for the V-Hawks on day one of the meet as she competed in the women's pole vault. Nuutinen cleared the initial height of 3.45 meters in her first attempt, but from there, she kept everyone on their toes as she cleared the next three heights on her final attempts. Nuutinen vaulted a new personal and school record of 3.65 meters (11' 11.75") to take fifth place after coming into the meet ranked No. 17. The fifth-place finish garnered All-American recognition for the first time in her career.
On day two, all three of the Viterbo Men's Track and Field representatives competed in their respective events. Jalen Anderson competed in the men's 110-meter hurdles and finished in 24th place with a time of 15.09 seconds. This was Anderson's first time competing at the National Meet.
On the field, two V-Hawks competed in the men's long jump, Justin Moore and Greg Jenkins. Moore scratched his first jump before jumping 7.37 meters on his second jump. His third jump was the best of the day for the V-Hawks, flying 7.40 meters (24' 3.5"). The jump was good for fifth place and to be named an All-American. Jenkins completed four good jumps at the meet. His first jump was 6.92 meters and he improved in each of his following jumps. Jenkins' final jump was 7.26 meters (23' 10") which was a new personal record and good for seventh place and All-American honors.
Moore also compete in the high jump on day two where he finished in 13th place. He cleared the initial bar of 2.00 meters (6' 6.75"), but was unable to clear the 2.05-meter mark.
On the final day of the meet, Brenna McDonough participated in the women's half marathon. McDonough came into the meet ranked 25th but finished in 15th place. She completed the race in 1:33:19.
