V-Hawks Fall to Mustangs, Begin Conference Play Next Week
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The V-Hawks traveled to Cedar Rapids in their final non-conference matchup before the begin of conference play. Through 40 minutes of play, the V-Hawks fell to the Mustangs, losing 92-65. The V-Hawks fall to 2-3 overall while the Mustangs of Mount Mercy improve to 4-3.
Offensively, the V-Hawks were led by Carson Koepnick's 14 points. He went 4-8 from the field and 4-7 from the three in his performance last night. Closely behind was Colin Adams' 13 points on 6-11 shooting from the field. Braden Crubel added 12, going 8-8 from the free throw line. Defensively, the V-Hawks were led by Carson Koepnick's six rebounds, followed by five from Kole Johnson, and four from Colin Adams. Braden Crubel added two steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The V-Hawks took an early lead with two layups made by Colin Adams and a three pointer from Carson Koepnick. The Mustangs stole the lead back on a 10-0 run over the V-Hawks. Colin Adams cut the run with a layup, but the V-Hawks remained down 12-9. The Mustangs continued to slowly improve upon their lead, going up 21-12 at the halfway point of the first half. Carson Koepnick scored a three pointer to cut the lead to six, but the Mustangs continued responding. With seven minutes left, Landon Thousand drained a three to cut the lead to four, and Carson Koepnick kept the game within reach with his own three pointer. Two made free throws from Landon Thousand brought the score to 29-27 in favor of Mount Mercy. The mustangs then scored six unanswered points, followed by seven more, going on a 13-2 run over the V-Hawks. Viterbo went into halftime down 46-31.
- Out of the half, the Mustangs scored first on a three. Treyton Fletcher responded with a layup. The V-Hawks continued to claw back, but the Mustangs kept extending their lead, going up by 20 points with 13 minutes left in the half. The two teams went back and forth for a while, keeping the Mustang lead at around 20 points. With eight minutes left, the V-Hawks fell to another short 5-0 run from the Mustangs. Both teams shot several free throws down the stretch, but the Mustangs took the 30 point lead with three minutes remaining. Ultimately, the V-Hawks fell to the Mustangs 92-65.

The V-Hawks begin CCAC competition next week on Wednesday, November 19th. The V-Hawks will travel to St. Francil (Ill.) and tip off is set for 7pm.
