Ryan DeLong - Head Coach - 5th Season

Ryan DeLong is entering his fifth season as V-Hawks head coach. DeLong completed his fourth season as V-Hawk coach, going 28-16, which was just the third winning season since 1995. The V-Hawks finished the regular season tied for fourth place in the Midwest Collegiate Conference, competing for the MCC title all the way until the final game of the regular season. In DeLong's first four seasons, the V-Hawks have compiled an overall record of 101-66 and have had 39 Academic All-Conference players, 10 First Team all-conference players including the 2006, 2007, and 2008 MCC Libero of the Year.

DeLong is also the director of the very successful Viterbo winter and summer volleyball camps. The winter camps have grown to 80 campers while the summer camp has grown to over 170 campers. He also has worked numerous elite camps including MVI clinics in Minnesota as well as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Sports camp at Luther College.


Prior to coming to Viterbo, Coach DeLong spent two seasons as the head coach at Western Wisconsin Technical College. Coach DeLong posted a 50-20 record there and two conference titles. Prior to WWTC, DeLong was the head coach at La Crosse Aquinas. DeLong served as Blugolds head coach for three years, finishing with two conference titles and an overall record of 45-7. He was La Crosse Tribune Coach of the Year in 2000, when the Blugolds went undefeated in the Mississippi Valley Conference, with a 12-0 record and remained undefeated until they fell to Osceola in the sectional finals.

DeLong graduated from UW-La Crosse in Exercise and Sport Science--Physical Education Teaching. After teaching three years in Special Education, Delong is currently pursuing his masters. DeLong and his wife Kari recently had their first child, Bradyn and reside in Holmen where Kari works as a middle school health teacher and is the assistant gymnastics coach at UW-La Crosse.

 
Phil Gilbert - Assistant Coach - 1st Season

Phil Gilbert is in his first year as an assistant coach with the V-Hawk Volleyball Program. Gilbert comes to Viterbo having plenty of volleyball coaching and playing experience. He has made coaching stops at Holmen Middle School, Holmen High School Varsity, and club teams in West Salem and Holmen. He has experience playing club volleyball at the adult level throughout the Coulee Region.

Outside of coaching, Gilbert is a sixth grade teacher at Holmen Middle School. Gilbert lives in West Salem, Wis. with his wife, Judy, and their two children. Gilbert's daughter, Allison is in her sophomore season on the volleyball team at Western Illinois University.

Eric Kunick - Assistant Coach - 4th Season

Eric Kunickis beginning his four year as an assistant coach for the Viterbo Women's Volleyball Program. During his third season on the V-Hawk staff, the V-Hawks compiled a 28-16 mark for their third consecutive winning season. The V-Hawks finished fourth in the MCC and have lost just six conference games in the past three seasons.

Kunick brings a wealth of coaching knowledge from spending four years as an assistant girls basketball coach at Eau Claire North High School. Outside of coaching volleyball, Kunick is also the V-Hawks Assistant Athletic Director for Communications and Events. He also finds time to volunteer for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes whom he worked for four years prior to coming to Viterbo University. Through FCA, Kunick has gained a wide variety of coaching knowledge by working numerous summer camps for a variety of sports.

Kunick graduated from UW-Eau Claire in Kinesiology-Exercise Management and from UW-La Crosse with a Masters of Science in Sports Administration. Eric and his wife Joya, reside in La Crosse where Joya works as a sports rehab tech at Gundersen Lutheran.
