Kansas City, Mo. – On Saturday night, the Viterbo University volleyball team made history by making its first ever appearance in the NAIA Volleyball National Tournament. On Sunday, the V-Hawks found out who they will play next as the NAIA released today the pools for the 2012 NAIA Volleyball National Tournament Presented by CNOS.
Viterbo finds themselves in pool F of the six pool, 24 team tournament which begins November 27th and runs through December 1. Joining the V-Hawks in pool F is The Master's College (California), Indiana Wesleyan University, and Cal State San Marcos. The Master's College and Indiana Wesleyan University earned opening round byes while Cal State San Marcos advanced by defeating Vanguard University 3-1 on Saturday night. The V-Hawks advanced by defeating Davenport University 3-0 (25-12, 25-23, and 25-12).
Viterbo will open pool play with Indiana Wesleyan University on Tuesday, November 27 at 8:30 pm. They will then play The Master's College on Wednesday, November 28 at 5:45 and will then finish pool on Thursday, November 29 against Cal State San Marcos. At the conclusion of pool play, the top two teams from each pool will move on to single elimination play starting on Friday with the national champion being crowned on Saturday, December 1.
Viterbo enters the next portion of the tournament 32-7 overall and was ranked 21st in the NAIA last edition of the top-25 poll. They earned their first ever trip to the NAIA tournament by earning an automatic bid by winning the Midwest Collegiate Conference tournament title.
Indiana Wesleyan enters national championship play with a 35-2 record and a Crossroads League regular season championship. IWU earned an automatic bid into the NAIA Tournament by winning the Crossroads League Tournament and are playing in their third national tournament.
The Master's is the top seed in Pool F and earned the second at-large bid into the tournament. The Mustangs enter play with a 26-5 record and will make their first NAIA National Championship appearance.
Cal State-San Marcos is the fourth seed in Pool F and is 24-13 this season. The Cougars won the Association of Independent Institutions Tournament to qualify for the tournament and this will be their second trip to the national tournament. Cal-State made their lone appearance last year and lost in the Opening Round.
