LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University women's soccer team advanced their overall record to 5-1 by beating the UW-Stout Blue Devils, 2-0, at Field for Kids in La Crosse, Wis., on Wednesday evening.
Bre Burry (So. – Huntley, Ill.) scored the first goal in the tenth minute by putting a corner kick by the Blue Devils keeper. The goal was Burry's third of the year. The V-Hawks kept the pressure on with four more shots in the half, but UW-Stout had a great chance for an equalizer in the 38th minute.
After a yellow card was handed out for a tackle inside the box, Jenna Kizlik took the penalty kick. However, Ashley Hicks (Fr. – Waukegan, Ill.) made the save and kept the one-goal advantage for the V-Hawks intact heading into half time. It was the only save Hicks would have to make in the match, which brings her total saves for the season to 32.
Viterbo didn't let off the gas in the second half. The team shot nine times, five of which were on goal. Unlike the Blue Devils, the V-Hawks took advantage of a penalty kick in the 71st minute. Lauren Neet (Sr. – Plover, Wis.) buried the shot to the corner of the goal, out of the reach of Blue Devils keeper Robbie Shelby, for her second goal of the season. The V-Hawks controlled possession in the second half and limited UW-Stout to only one corner kick in the second half after they had four such set pieces in the first half.
With the loss, the UW-Stout Blue Devils fall to 1-2 on the season. The V-Hawks will try for their second three-game winning streak when the team faces Roosevelt University at 1:00 p.m. on September 15 at the Outdoor Athletic Complex.
