La Crosse, Wis. – Viterbo University men's soccer coach Andy Lee announced today that he has accepted a coaching position with FC Wisconsin Eclipse Select Soccer Club. Lee has also been named the Boys' Soccer Head Coach at Whitefish Bay High School.
"It has been an incredibly tough decision to leave Viterbo, and in particular all the players I have had the pleasure to work with," commented Coach Lee. "It is through their hard work and commitment that the program has developed so much over the past 6 years. I have developed great relationships with so many players, and I thank each one of them for the effort they gave. I also thank Barry Fried for the opportunity to coach at Viterbo, it has been a great experience for me and as I move on to a new chapter in my career I will have great memories of Viterbo University."
"Andy did a tremendous job rebuilding our men's soccer program," stated Barry Fried, Viterbo University athletics director. "His teams were always well prepared and competed hard. He will be missed!"
Lee took over the V-Hawk soccer program in 2006 and turned the program into a yearly contender in the Midwest Collegiate Conference. Throughout Lee's six seasons, the V-Hawks won 44 games which is the second most by a V-Hawk men's soccer coach. His teams routinely finished in the top four of the MCC and regularly advanced to at least the MCC semifinals his final five seasons.
Lee's best season as head coach at Viterbo was in 2009 when he helped guide the V-Hawks to their best season since the 2003 season. That season, the V-Hawks finished 6-1-1 (12-6-2 overall) in the MCC and advanced to the MCC Championship game where they lost in double overtime.
Lee did not only make his impact felt at Viterbo as he played a major role in the development of youth soccer in the Coulee Region. Lee spent three seasons as the head coach at Aquinas High School where he led the Blugolds to a WIAA State Tournament appearance in 2010. Lee made even more of an impact as he served as director of coaching and the youth academy director for the Coulee Region United Soccer Association.
"I have also been involved in soccer at every level in the Coulee Region and I am equally sad to be leaving those great organizations and all the great people and players I have worked with," commented Coach Lee.
Lee leaves Viterbo to coach for FC Wisconsin which is a select soccer club that plays in the very strong Elite Clubs National League. The club is for girls ages 14-18 and will feature some of the best youth soccer players in southern Wisconsin. Lee joins a coaching staff of eight members who work with all players in the club so that every coach works with every team, insuring a consistent style, philosophy, and developmental environment.
Moving back to the Milwaukee area also allows Lee to move back closer to family as his wife Jen is from that area. Lee came to Viterbo University after having a great playing career at UW-Milwaukee and Cardinal Stritch University.
"While I'm sad to see him leave Viterbo, this is a good opportunity for him and his family to return to the Milwaukee area," commented Friedd. I know he will succeed and we wish him well."
A search will begin immediately for Coach Lee's successor at Viterbo University.
