Interview with Head Coach Wayne Wagner
La Crosse, Wis. – Sophomore Jasper Duberry (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) hit one of two free throws with 4 seconds left in overtime to help Viterbo earn a 60-58 upset win over #24 Grand View University.
After Viterbo fell behind 49-44 with 4:38 left in regulation, the V-Hawks scored the next seven points to take a 51-49 lead with one minute remaining. Redshirt sophomore Izac Sheforgen (St. Francis, Minn.) sparked the run with back-back jumpers while junior Alex Koeller (Marshall, Wis.) hit a three pointer. Kevin Smith of Grand View would then tie the game on a jumper with 28 seconds. Matt Turba (Jr./So. – Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) would give the V-Hawks a 53-51 lead with 3 seconds left but the V-Hawks could not hold on. Grand View's Allen Clark drove the length of the court and hit a lay-up as time expired to send the game into overtime.
The extra period was back and forth as neither team led by more than two points. Viterbo took a 59-57 lead on a jumper by Sheforgen with a minute remaining. Kody Ingle would then hit 1-2 free throws for the Vikings with 35 seconds on the clock. Koeller would then miss two free throws for the V-Hawks leaving the door open for the Vikings. However, Viterbo's defense would force a travel and Duberry was fouled on the inbounds. He would hit one free throw to give the V-Hawks a 60-58 lead and the Vikings would not get off a shot before time expired.
Viterbo led for most of the first half including taking its largest lead of the game at 27-16 with 2:40 left before the break. Viterbo used an 18-6 run to build that lead which included seven points from Sheforgen. Grand View was able to cut their deficit to six (27-21) at the break and eventually took the lead early in the second half. Ingle helped the Vikings get the lead back as he hit three three-pointers to open the second half.
Sheforgen led the way for the V-Hawks offensively as he scored 19 points off the bench while Duberry added 11 points and Turba chipped in 10 points. Duberry also had 8 rebounds to lead the V-Hawks. Ingle and Smith each had 14 points to lead the Vikings. As a team, the V-Hawks finished 21-50 (42%) from the floor while Grand View was 20-50 (40%). Grand View did have a 38-28 edge on the boards but Viterbo did have six less turnovers than the Vikings (17).
The win improves the V-Hawks to 8-11 overall and 3-4 in Midwest Collegiate Conference action. The loss drops the Vikings to 4-3 in league play and 10-5 overall. Things do not get any easier for the V-Hawks as they host #25 St. Ambrose University on Wednesday night at 7:30 pm.
