Madison, Wis. - The Viterbo men's and women's bowling teams came up with strong showings at the Warhawk Open in Madison. The V-Hawk men finished 5th out of 30 teams with the V-Hawk women were 11th out of 20 teams.
The Viterbo men were in first place after Saturday's individual games. Matt Krueger (So. - Green Bay, Wis.) led the way with an average of 214 and an 8th place finish in the individual competition. Rob Warren (Fr. - Antigo, Wis.) was next, averaging 209 and finishing 12th overall.T.J. York (Fr. - Embden, Maine) averaged 206. Greg Pizl (So. - Antigo, Wis.) averaged 196. Jade Lucas (So. - Marshfield, Wis.) averaged 189.
Viterbo slipped slightly in Sunday's Baker competition, but still was only 80 pins out of second place. "The was a very strong showing for the guys," said V-Hawks coach Jim Socha."We really competed well, basically every frame of every game.If this group continues to work like we expect them to work, it'll be a very good season."
The Viterbo women rebounded from a sluggish start Saturday.Rachel Schalow (So. - Marshfield, Wis.) led the V-Hawks averaging 194 and finishing in second place overall. Kendra Bundy (So. - Tomah, Wis.) averaged 172, while Marista Pizl (Fr. - Antigo, Wis.) averaged 171. "Rachel and Kendra were solid all weekend as always," said Socha."Pizl and Amanda Gill (Fr. - Illinois) and Chelsie Kraus (Fr. - Onalaska, Wis.) are all adjusting very well to college bowling. I'm encouraged by their improvement. Sam Willingmyre is also doing a very solid job for us."
