La Crosse, Wis. - The Viterbo University women's basketball team wrapped up the 2009-10 season recently when they hosted their annual end of the year banquet. Roughly 75 people attended this year's banquet which was held April 17th at The Golf Club at Cedar Creek.
Seniors Katina Mandylaris (Melbourne, Australia) and Joni Stanek (Kendall, Wis.) were honored as the lone seniors for their commitment and dedication to the V-Hawk women's basketball programs. Mandylaris and Stanek will be truly missed as they both made a huge impact on the V-Hawk program. They were both 1,000 point scorers and two of the top rebounders over their V-Hawk careers.
Mandylaris also walked away with three of the team's top awards. She was given the teams Student-Athlete of the Year award for having the highest GPA over the last two semesters of any upperclassmen. For the fourth straight season, Mandylaris also won the Chairman of the Boards award as she finished with a team high 9.7 rebounds per game. The third award she won was a new award given this year that is in honor of the late Father Tom O'Neill who served as Viterbo's Vice President of Mission and Ministry. The award is called the Father Tom O'Neill Memorial "4C" award; the four C's stand for character, classroom, court, and community. This award is not given annually but is given to the women's basketball player that exemplifies outstanding character, academic excellence, solid contribution on the basketball court, and exemplary service to the campus and greater community.
Freshman Dani Templin (Richland Center, Wis.) was voted by her coaches and teammates as the team's Rookie of the Year while Emily Larson (Middleton, Wis.) was honored as the team's Most Improved Player. Laquita Becker (Fr. - Caledonia, Minn.) and Paige Babish (So. - West Salem, Wis.) were honored by their teammates and coaches as the Co-Defensive Players of the Year. Finally, junior Brooke Anderson (Iola, Wis.) was given the team's NAIA Champions of Character award as well as the John Wooden Team Spirit award.
Also honored at the banquet was associate head coach Amy Olson who has decided to step down after six seasons on the staff. Coach Olson and her husband Mike are expecting their first child in June.
