Waterloo, Iowa - The Viterbo University baseball team extended their season at least one more game today as they defeated St. Ambrose University 8-3 in the first round of the loser's bracket in the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament. The win advanced the V-Hawks to face #1 Iowa Wesleyan College. That game was postponed in the sixth inning due to inclement weather with the score tied at 5. The game will be finished at 11:00 am on Tuesday morning.
In the first game against St. Ambrose University, the V-Hawks scored four runs in the first inning. Then in the second, the Bees cut their deficit to one after scoring three unearned runs. V-Hawk pitcher Brent Peotter (So. - Menasha, Wis.) would settle in from there as he would not allow another run as he picked up the complete game victory.
The nightcap would start out similar for the V-Hawks as they scored five runs in the first inning against the Tigers of Iowa Wesleyan College. All five of the first five batters would reach base before an out was recorded. But the Tigers would slowly claw their way back into the game as the tied it at 5 in the top of the fifth. Prior to the start of the sixth inning, the game was halted due to heavy rainfall. With no end in sight, the game was called and will be completed in the morning. The winner of this game will then advance to the MCC Championship game to face #2 Grand View University. GVU won their first two games of the tournament and will have to be defeated twice to be knocked out of the tournament.
