Waterloo, Iowa - The Viterbo University baseball team pick a bad day to have one of its worst games of the season as they lost the opening game of the Midwest Collegiate Conference tournament 13-2 to Grand View University. The V-Hawks gave up 13 runs on 16 hits while also committing 6 errors in the game.

Grand View wasted no time getting on the score board as they opened the first inning with five of the first six batters reaching base. They would score three runs in the first inning. Viterbo would try to match the Vikings in the bottom half of the inning but were only able to score one run on a solo homerun by Brandon Buelow (Jr. - Milwaukee, Wis.). It was Buelow's 11th homerun of the season which ties him for third most in a single season. After Grand View picked up a run in the second and fourth innings, the V-Hawks would make a little noise in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Brett Moravec (Boulder City, Nev.) would hit a solo home run of his own but that would be the final run of the game for the V-Hawks.

The V-Hawk offense would go silence after that as they would record just one hit and three base runners over the final five innings of the game. The Vikings would tack on one run in the seventh, two runs in the eighth, and four runs in the ninth to pull away. The lack of offense for the V-Hawks could be contributed to the stellar pitching of Viking pitcher Jared Meggison. Meggison allowed just two runs on five hits while striking out six in a complete game performance.

Junior Howard Heinrich (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) got the start but struggled early as he allowed six runs on eight hits in four innings of work. Senior Kyle Dreger (Manitowoc, Wis.) gave three solid innings of relief before struggling in the ninth. Dreger allowed six runs on six hits while striking out five in 4.1 innings.

The loss drops the V-Hawks to 27-20-1 overall while the Vikings improve to 26-18 on the year. Viterbo will now have to battle their way back through the loser's bracket if they want a chance to get a bid to the 2010 NAIA National Tournament. Viterbo will play St. Ambrose University at 2:00 pm on Monday at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo, Iowa. St. Ambrose University lost to top seeded Iowa Wesleyan College 6-5 in their first game.
