La Crosse, Wis. - The Viterbo University Softball team lost its final two home games of the season on Wednesday as they were defeated in both games of a double-header against William Penn University.

The V-Hawks were shutout 4-0 in the first game as William Penn's starting pitcher Monica Villarreal tossed a complete game two hitter. Villarreal struck out 12 V-Hawk batters as she picked up her 19th win of the season.

William Penn broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning when Tyanna Helton hit a leadoff home run giving the Statesmen a 1-0 lead. The remaining three runs scored by the Statesmen would be unearned as the V-Hawks struggled with fielding errors in the games final three innings.

Villarreal continued her pitching dominance throughout the game as she allowed the V-Hawks just their second hit of the game in the seventh inning as Betsy Ward (Jr. - River Falls, Wis.) hit a two-out double. The V-Hawks would strand Ward at second base though as Jenna Strait (Jr. - La Farge, Wis.) grounded out to the third baseman ending the game and sealing the complete game shutout for Villarreal.

Despite picking up the loss, Bethanee Nitz (Fr. - Menomonee Falls, Wis.) pitched a fine game for the V-Hawks as she allowed just one earned run on seven hits in a complete game effort.

William Penn's other standout pitcher, Hannah Lugar, matched Villarreal's performance in the second game as she earned a win while pitching a two-hitter of her own. Lugar allowed just one run in her complete game performance as she struck out six V-Hawk batters.

Viterbo found the scoreboard early as Sami Weaver's (Fr. - Trempealeau, Wis.) double drove in Kenisha McGuire (Fr. - La Crosse, Wis.) giving the V-Hawks a 1-0 lead after the first inning.

Neither team would score for the next five innings as both teams combined for just one hit. William Penn broke the scoring drought in the sixth inning as they scored the games final two runs which ended up being the game winning runs.

Both Molly Miller and Kara Atkins hit RBI singles for the Statesmen giving them the 2-1 lead heading in to the final inning. Viterbo would threaten to score in the bottom of the seventh inning as two runners reached base, but neither would score as Lugar got Andrea Haines (Jr. - Viroqua, Wis.) to ground out to first base to end the game.

Kallie Mechling (So. - Holmen, Wis.) was charged with the loss for the V-Hawks as she allowed two runs on just five hits in a complete game effort.

The V-Hawks will take on Mount Mercy College on May 1, as the two teams square off in the first round of the Midwest Collegiate Conference tournament.
