La Crosse, Wis. - The Viterbo University Athletics Department hosted it fourth annual Athletic Honors Banquet on Sunday night. Besides V-Hawk seniors being honored, the athletic department handed out its Male and Female Athletes of the Year awards along with their Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year award and their Champions of Character of the Year award.
Women's golfer Melissa Klecker (Sr. - Hastings, Minn.) was named the Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year while Heather Harelstad (Sr. - Chippewa Falls, Wis.) was named the Champions of Character of the Year. Harelstad would also pick up the Female Athlete of the Year award as Scott Buschman (Sr. - Naperville, Ill.) was named Male Athlete of the Year.
Klecker has made her impact in both the classroom and on the course for the V-Hawks. A member of the inaugural women's golf team, Klecker will graduate this May with a 3.97 GPA. An accounting major, Klecker has played on the golf team since the program was added in 2007. Upon graduation Klecker will take advantage of the new 4+1 MBA program at Viterbo and earn her master's degree by next May. The award goes to a graduating senior who has the highest cumulative grade-point average.
Harelstad had another very successful season for the V-Hawk volleyball team but equally impressive is the impact that she has made off the court for Viterbo. The Champions of Character initiative is a NAIA national program that teaches five core values: respect, integrity, servant leadership, responsibility, and sportsmanship. Harelstad has shown all of these character traits both on and off the court this season. Off of the court, Harelstad serves as the president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and leads numerous service projects with her teammates. These service projects have included participation in Relay for life, carving pumpkins with the Boys and Girls Club, and organizing the annual Dig Pink fundraiser for breast cancer research and awareness.
On the court, Harelstad had another typical season for the V-Hawks as she was named MCC First Team All-Conference for the third straight season. She was also honored as the MCC Libero of the Year for the third consecutive season. Statistically, Harelstad led the V-Hawks with 714 digs and a 98.7 serve percentage. She anchored a defense that helped lead Viterbo to a 31-11 record, its most wins since 1990, and a trip to the conference tournament championship game. Harelstad finishes her career with her name all over the record books but it may be the impact she had on Viterbo's campus (team) that she will be remembered for.
For the second straight year, Buschman was honored as the male athlete of the year. The award tops of may be one of the best single season's ever had by a V-Hawk men's basketball player. The MCC Player of the Year, Buschman led the V-Hawks and the MCC in scoring (20.4 ppg), rebounding (11.3 rpg) and double-doubles (23). His rebounding and double-doubles ranked tops in the NAIA as he became just the second player in men's basketball history to earn First Team All-American honors. The numbers speak for themselves but equally impressive was how Buschman and his teammates responded after starting the season 3-11 to win their first MCC Conference championship since the 1997-98 season.
