La Crosse, Wis. - The Viterbo University Baseball team earned a series sweep over William Penn University on Sunday as the V-Hawks came away with a 9-3 victory.

The V-Hawks used a complete game effort by starting pitcher Howard Heinrich (Jr. - Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) as he earned the win allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out eight Statesmen batters.

Viterbo captured their first lead of the game in the fourth inning when Andy Behnke (Jr. - Marshall, Minn.) hit a three-run home run giving the V-Hawks a 4-3 lead. Viterbo would add three more runs in the sixth inning as Brett Rettenmeier (Jr. - Cedar Rapids, Iowa) hit a two-run home run bringing home Brett Moravec (Jr. - Boulder City, Nev.). Shawn Loch (Sr. - Suamico, Wis.) brought in the final run of the inning on a RBI triple but recorded the final out of the inning as he was thrown out at home going for an inside the park home run.

The V-Hawks scored their final two runs in the following inning as both Nick Lenendorf (Sr. - Eastman, Wis.) and Moravec brought in runs with their RBI doubles.

William Penn scored all three of their runs in the first inning as three different Statesmen each drove in a run. Heinrich shut down the Statesmen offense for the remainder of the game as he allowed just four hits over the final eight innings.

Moravec and Behnke both led the V-Hawks offensively as they each added three hits while Rettenmeier and Brandon Buelow (Jr. - Milwaukee, Wis.) both went 2-for-4 at the plate.

The V-Hawks currently hold a half-game lead over Grand View University as Viterbo sits atop the Midwest Collegiate Conference with a 15-6 record. The race for the conference championship will not be decided till next weekend though as Grand View hosts Viterbo in both teams' conference finales with the three-game series beginning on May 1st.

The loss drops William Penn in to third place and a game and a half behind the V-Hawks as the Statesmen hold a 14-8 MCC record.

The V-Hawks will return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Milwaukee for a non-conference double-header against Cardinal Stritch University. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
