Peosta, Iowa - The Viterbo University Baseball team split in its double-header against Clarke College on Wednesday as both games took extra innings to complete. The V-Hawks came out on the losing end of a 6-5 game in the first but earned a 4-1 victory in the second.
Viterbo would jump ahead early in game one as Brett Moravec (Jr. - Boulder City, Nev.) hit a grand slam in the top of the first off of starting pitcher Jake Moser giving the V-Hawks a quick 4-0 lead.
The V-Hawks offense sputtered from this point though as they managed just two hits over the next four innings while Clarke put together a three run fifth inning giving them a 5-4 lead.
Viterbo finally found the scoreboard again in the following inning as they tied the game 5-5 on an RBI single by Brandon Buelow (Jr. - Milwaukee, Wis.).
After a scoreless seventh, Viterbo was unable to get Shawn Loch (Sr. - Suamico, Wis.) in from second base as Buelow fouled out to the catcher giving Clarke an opportunity to end the game in the bottom of the eighth. Clarke would take full advantage of the opportunity as Jared Munson hit an RBI single to center field scoring Ryan Kelly for the game winning run.
J.D. Judd would earn the win on the mound for the Clarke as he allowed no runs on three hits as he pitched the final three innings of the game. Nick Lenzendorf (Sr. - Eastman, Wis.) picked up the loss for the V-Hawks as he allowed one run on two hits in the final inning.
Buelow led the V-Hawks at the plate in game one going 3-for-5 with an RBI. Collecting two hits apiece were Lenzendorf and Andy Behnke (Jr. - Marshall, Minn.)
The second game of the double-header would go one inning longer than the first game as the V-Hawks pitching staff combined to throw a two-hitter.
With the score tied 1-1 after the scheduled seven innings, Viterbo broke the scoring drought as Eli Tupuola (Sr. - San Diego, Calif.) hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth giving the V-Hawks a 3-1 lead. Viterbo would tack on one more run as a Crusaders error allowed Lenzendorf to cross home plate making the score 4-1 heading in to the bottom of the ninth.
Clarke's Dean Molitor would reach on a fielder's choice before Viterbo's Moravec got Michael Jimenez to ground in to a 6-4-3 double-play to end the game. Moravec would earn the save for the V-Hawks after he allowed no runs or hits in his one inning of work. Howard Heinrich (Jr. - Wisconsin, Rapids, Wis.) picked up the win for Viterbo after allowing no runs on just one hit in his five innings of relief work.
Leading the V-Hawks at the plate were Tupuola and Lenzendorf who each collected two hits while Tupuola also added two RBI.
The V-Hawks will next be in action this weekend as they host William Penn University in a double-header on Saturday and a single nine-inning game on Sunday.
