La Crosse, Wis. - The Viterbo University Softball team split its double-header against Iowa Wesleyan College on Tuesday as the V-Hawks fell short 3-1 in ten innings in game one but came out victorious by the score of 8-1 in game two.
Iowa Wesleyan's starting pitcher Ayla Serrano had a no-hitter going with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning before Jenna Strait's (Jr. - La Farge, Wis.) double brought in Betsy Ward (Jr. - River Falls, Wis.) who had drawn a walk earlier in the inning. The run not only broke up the no-hitter but also scored the game tying run which forced the game into extra innings.
Following a Serrano double in the top of the tenth inning, Ashley Mysliwiec hit her second home run of the game as she gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead. The V-Hawks would proceed to go one-two-three in the bottom half of the inning as Serrano earned the complete game victory after allowing just two hits and striking out 12 V-Hawk batters.
V-Hawks starting pitcher Bethanee Nitz (Fr. - Menomonee Falls, Wis.) picked up the loss after she also pitched a complete game allowing three earned runs on seven hits. The only V-Hawks to record hits in game one were Strait and Sami Weaver (Fr. - Trempealeau, Wis.) who each went 1-for-4.
Viterbo would get revenge in game two as they got ahead early and never looked back behind starting pitcher Kallie Mechling (So. - Holmen, Wis.). Mechling would go on to earn the win as she allowed just one earned run on seven hits in a complete game effort.
The V-Hawks would strike early as they put a three spot on the board in the first inning thanks to run producing hits by Weaver, Strait, and Andrea Haines (Jr. - Arcadia, Wis.). After scoring one run in each the third and fourth innings, the V-Hawks would score three more insurance runs in the sixth inning highlighted by a two RBI single by Ward. Mechling and the V-Hawks would seal the game from this point and earn the 8-1 victory as the V-Hawks starter allowed just one hit in the final three innings.
The V-Hawks had four players' record two hits in the final game as Ward led the way going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Serrano and Haleigh Hempen led the Tigers at the plate as they each recorded two hits.
The split leaves Viterbo with a 7-27 overall record and a 3-15 Midwest Collegiate Conference record. Iowa Wesleyan moves to 17-29 overall and 7-10 in the MCC. The V-Hawks are next in action on Friday as they travel to Elgin, Illinois to face Judson College in a non-conference double-header.
