La Crosse, Wis. - Viterbo University cross country coach John Metelko announced Friday that Concordia Lutheran High School runner Mike Boner (Kendallville, Ind.) will continue his running career with the V-Hawk's men's program beginning next fall and that Wisconsin Dells High School runner Melissa Blumberg (Lake Delton, Wis.) will join the women's team. Boner becomes the fifth runner to join the men's cross country team for the 2010-2011 season while Blumberg also becomes the fifth runner to join the women's cross country team for the 2010-2011 season.

Boner earned three letters in cross country and track and field and one letter in swimming at Concordia Lutheran High School. As a sophomore and as a junior he earned the cadets most improved runner award in cross country. As a senior he was named the mental attitude award winner in cross country and is a captain of his cross country and track and field team.

In track and field competition, Boner is running the 3200 meter run and a leg of the 4 X 800 meter relay for the cadets this spring.

"Mike has battled some injuries during his high school career, but he has the potential to be an outstanding runner at the college level," said Metelko. "He is a very smart runner with great leadership characteristics both on and off of the course. I really think that Mike will be a great asset to our program over the next four years."

Blumberg has run cross country all four years at Wisconsin Dells High School. Besides contributing to the Chiefs cross country program, Blumberg has also been the president for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and for Students Against Destructive Decisions at Wisconsin Dells. Blumberg is also a strong student who has been a four-year member of the honor roll in high school.

"Melissa's experience and willingness to work hard will help her contribute to our team as a freshman, and to be a leader in our program in the future" said Metelko.

Blumberg will join a women's cross country team which finished second overall in the Midwest Collegiate Conference in their second season overall. Boner will join a men's cross country team which finished fourth overall in the Midwest Collegiate Conference last season.
