Davenport, Iowa - The Viterbo University Softball team split its double-header against Saint Ambrose University on Wednesday as a bad inning cost the V-Hawks a 5-2 loss in game one while they ended up on the winning side in game two by the same score.
Bethanee Nitz (Fr. - Menomonee Falls, Wis.) pitched a complete game for the V-Hawks as she picked up the loss despite allowing just five hits over the games final four innings. The Queen Bees scored all five of their runs on four hits in the second inning which proved to be enough as the V-Hawks managed just two runs on their 11 hits.
Viterbo put up single runs in both the third and fourth innings on RBI singles by Betsy Ward (Jr. - River Falls, Wis.) and Kelly Sentkowski, (Sr. - Plainfield, Wis.) but that would be all as the V-Hawks went scoreless in the final three innings.
Caitlin Polzin picked up the win for the Queen Bees as she allowed just two runs on 11 hits while striking out seven V-Hawk batters in a complete game.
Viterbo would get revenge in game two though as Kallie Mechling (So. - Holmen, Wis.) earned the win as she allowed two runs on six hits in a complete game for the V-Hawks.
The V-Hawks would strike early as Ward's three run home run gave Viterbo an early 3-0 lead. After allowing one run in the bottom of the first, the V-Hawks would score two more in the third inning highlighted by another Ward home run, this time a solo shot.
The Queen Bees would add one more run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Jessica Murphy but that would be all as Mechling pitched a perfect sixth and seventh inning to seal the 5-2 victory for the V-Hawks.
Leading the V-Hawks in hitting was Ward who went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBI. Polzin led the Queen Bees in hitting as she went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
The split leaves Viterbo with a 6-24 overall record and a 2-12 Midwest Collegiate Conference record. Saint Ambrose moves to 13-14 overall and 10-6 in the MCC. The V-Hawks next game will be on Sunday, April 18th as they travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to take on Mount Mercy College.
