La Crosse, Wis. - The Viterbo University Softball team was swept in its double-header Sunday afternoon by Waldorf College as the V-Hawks combined to score just two runs. The V-Hawks were defeated 7-1 in the first game and 10-1 in the second game.
Despite pitching a complete game, Bethanee Nitz (Fr. - Menomonee Falls, Wis.) picked up the loss in game one as she allowed seven earned runs on nine hits. Lauren Devereaux earned the win on the hill as she allowed just one earned run on seven hits as she pitched a complete game for the Warriors.
The V-Hawks didn't allow any big scoring innings, but Waldorf did a good job scoring frequently as they scored in five of the seven innings. The Warriors scoring was highlighted by Andrea Blanchard home runs in both the third and seventh innings. Blanchard finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI.
The V-Hawks lone run was scored in the sixth inning when Betsy Ward's (Jr. - River Falls, Wis.) double brought in Sami Weaver (Fr. - Trempealeau, Wis.) who had led off the inning with a double of her own. Weaver led the V-Hawks in hitting in game one as she went 3-for-3 at the plate.
Holly Gilbertson earned the game two victory on the mound for the Warriors as she allowed just one earned run on six hits in her complete game effort.
The V-Hawks were within striking distance after they had picked up a run in the bottom of the sixth on a fielder's choice RBI bunt by Kallie Mechling (So. - Holmen, Wis.) scoring Weaver making the score 4-1. But a six run top of the seventh sealed the game for the Warriors as the V-hawks went one-two-three in the bottom of the inning.
Earning the loss for Viterbo was Mechling who gave up eight runs on 13 hits in six innings of work. Leading the V-Hawks at the plate in game two was Christina Breuer (Sr. - Glen Haven, Wis.) and Kenisha McGuire (Fr. - La Crosse, Wis.) who each recorded two hits.
The V-Hawks now hold a 5-23 overall record and a 1-11 Midwest Collegiate Conference record. The two wins give Waldorf a 10-13 overall record and a 9-4 MCC record. The V-Hawks are next in action on Wednesday as they travel to Davenport, Iowa for a double-header against Saint Ambrose University.
