
La Crosse, Wis. - The Viterbo University Baseball team swept Saturday's double-header against Iowa Wesleyan College in two very competitive games. The V-Hawks won game one 5-3 and snuck out an extra inning 2-1 victory in game two.
With the score tied at 1-1 after four innings, the V-Hawks used back-to-back RBI doubles by Eli Tupuola (Sr. - San Diego, Calif.) and Brandon Buelow (Jr. - Milwaukee, Wis.) to take a 3-1 lead. Iowa Wesleyan would respond in the sixth inning with two runs of their own as they tied the game once again.
The V-Hawks would score the go ahead run in the bottom of the sixth when Shawn Loch's (Sr. - Suamico, Wis.) single brought in Nick Lenzendorf (Sr. - Eastman, Wis.) who led off the inning with a walk. Brett Moravec's (Jr. - Boulder City, Nev.) RBI single added an insurance run for the V-Hawks as they entered the final inning with a 5-3 lead.
Kyle Dreger (Sr. - Manitowoc, Wis.) pitched the final inning for the V-Hawks in relief of starting pitcher Howard Heinrich (Jr. - Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) who gave up three earned runs on five hits in six innings of work. Dreger pitched a perfect seventh inning for Viterbo as he earned the save and secured the 5-3 victory for the V-Hawks.
Leading the V-Hawks at the plate in game one was Buelow who went a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Loch went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
It took eight innings to decide game two as both team's starting pitchers threw gems for their respective teams. Drew Farrell (Jr. - Middleton, Wis.) earned the win as he pitched a complete game allowing just one earned run on seven hits. He also struck out 10 Iowa Wesleyan batters. Chris Walls pitched 5.2 innings for the Tigers allowing one earned run on six hits as he did not factor in to the decision.
Iowa Wesleyan would go one-two-three in the top of the eighth before Justin Daniels (Jr. - Holmen, Wis.) received the opportunity to eend the game. With runners on first and second and two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Daniels stepped up to the plate and hit the game winning RBI double scoring Brett Rettenmeier (Jr. - Cedar Rapids, Iowa) as the V-Hawks escaped with the 2-1 victory.
The double-header sweep gives the V-Hawks a 19-12-1 overall record and a 9-3 Midwest Collegiate Conference record which now moves the V-Hawks in to a first place tie with William Penn University. The loss drops the Tigers to 18-18 overall and 9-4 in the MCC. The three-game series will be completed tomorrow as the V-Hawks go for the sweep at the Viterbo University Outdoor Sports Complex with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 pm.
