
Forest City, Iowa - Waldorf College avoided a three-game sweep against Viterbo University on Tuesday as they defeated the V-Hawks 9-3 to earn their first Midwest Collegiate Conference victory of the season.
Waldorf's starting pitcher Williams Lovera threw a complete game as he allowed just one earned run on six hits for the Warriors. Lovera also struck out six batters on way to earning his second win of the season.
The Warriors broke open the game in the sixth inning as they snapped a 2-2 tie with a six run inning. The inning's first run came when Schultz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded driving in Nelson who had singled to lead off the inning. The Warriors would go on to score five more runs in the inning despite recording just two hits. Four of the six runs were scored due to players drawing bases loaded walks or being hit by a pitch.
Logan Nelson was the Warriors leading hitter as he went 4-for-5 with two RBI. Also finding success at the plate for Waldorf was designated hitter A.J. Rivera who went 3-for-6 with an RBI.
Picking up the loss for the V-Hawks was starting pitcher Nick Lenzendorf (Sr. - Eastman, Wis.) as he gave up three earned runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work for Viterbo.
The leading hitter for the V-Hawks was Eli Tupuola (Sr. - San Diego, Calif.) who hit a solo home run as part of his 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
After avoiding the sweep and earning their first conference win of the year, the Warriors are now 9-19 overall and 1-9 in the MCC. The loss moves Viterbo to 17-12-1 overall with a 7-3 MCC record.
The V-Hawks next series will come at home against Iowa Wesleyan College with a double-header on Saturday and a single game on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm on Saturday.
