La Crosse, Wis. - The Viterbo University Baseball team defeated Waldorf College twice on Monday as the teams faced off in a double-header at the Viterbo University Outdoor Athletic Complex. The V-Hawks took game one 4-0, while they used a late rally in the last inning to earn the 7-6 win in game two.
Brent Peotter (So. - Menasha, Wis.) led the way for the V-Hawks in game one as he allowed just three hits in way to earning a complete game shutout victory. However, Viterbo also struggled to find any offense until the fifth inning when they were able to score three runs to give them a 4-0 advantage. Three different V-Hawks drove in runs in the inning as Viterbo's defense shut down the Warriors for the final two innings earning the V-Hawks the 4-0 win.
Leading the V-Hawks offensively was Shawn Loch (Sr. - Suamico, Wis.) and John Pogatchnik (Sr. - Holdingford, Minn.) who each went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Brandon Buelow (Jr. - Milwaukee, Wis.) and Nick Lenzendorf (Sr. - Eastman, Wis.) also contributed RBI's for the V-Hawks in game one.
Game two came down to the last play of the game as the V-Hawks used a three-run seventh inning to edge the Warriors 7-6.
With the bases loaded and just one out, Justin Daniels (Jr. - Holmen, Wis.) hit a ball back to the pitcher who proceeded to throw home to get out the game-winning run and potentially end the game with the force out at first for a double-play. However the game-winning run would score as an errant throw from the pitcher forced the catcher to pull his foot from the base as Loch crossed the plate for the game-winning run.
Earning the win on the mound for the V-Hawks was Drew Farrell (Jr. - Middleton, Wis.) who pitched the final 2.2 innings in relief of starting pitcher Howard Heinrich (Jr. - Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.). Farrell allowed two unearned runs on four hits while striking out two Waldorf batters.
The leading hitters for Viterbo were Brett Rettenmeier (Jr. - Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and Eli Tupuola (Sr. - San Diego, Calif.) who each went 2-for-4. Tupuola also drove in two runs in the game two victory.
With the two wins, the V-Hawks are now 17-11-1 overall with a 7-2 Midwest Collegiate Conference record. The loss drops Waldorf to 8-19 overall and 0-9 in the MCC. The same two teams match-up tomorrow as the final game of the series will be played in Forest City, Iowa.
