La Crosse, Wis. - The Viterbo University Baseball team lost just their second game out of their last twelve as the team didn't record a single hit until the fifth inning. Clarke College's starting pitcher Jake Moser threw six innings allowing just one run on three hits in the Crusaders 8-1 victory over the V-Hawks.
After the Crusaders scored one-run in both the first and second innings, they added another two in the fifth inning after some costly V-Hawk mistakes. Leadoff batter Michael Jiminez reached on an error followed by back-to-back hit batsmen. Viterbo's starting pitcher Howard Heinrich (Jr. - Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) would walk in a run before being relieved by Drew Farrell (Jr. - Middleton, Wis.). Jared Krasselt scored the Crusaders second run as Farrell got J.D. Judd to ground in to a double-play.
The V-Hawks scored their lone run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Eli Tupuola (Sr. - San Diego, Calif.) which scored John Pogatchnik (Sr. - Holdingford, Minn.) who had earlier reached on a fielder's choice.
The Crusaders would put the finishing touches on the game as they scored four more runs in the top of the seventh to seal the 8-1 victory.
The leading hitter for Viterbo was Brandon Buelow (Jr. - Milwaukee, Wis.) who was the only V-Hawk who recorded multiple hits as he went 2-for-3. Picking up the loss was Heinrich who pitched 4.0 innings while allowing two earned runs despite striking out five batters. Kyle Dreger (Sr. - Manitowoc, Wis.) pitched two scoreless innings for the V-Hawks as he allowed two hits and stuck out one Clarke batter.
With the loss the V-Hawks are now 13-11-1 on the season with a 5-2 Midwest Collegiate Conference record. The win moves Clarke to 13-10 overall with a 3-3 MCC record. The V-Hawks return to action tomorrow with a double-header against Saint Mary's University of Minnesota with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 pm.
