Oskaloosa, Iowa - The Viterbo University Softball team had a rough weekend in Oskaloosa, Iowa as they dropped all four of their games to Midwest Collegiate Conference opponents.
The V-Hawks started the weekend off with a 7-4 loss to William Penn University despite getting out to a 4-1 lead after the second inning. The V-Hawks gave up four runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the sixth inning which proved to be enough as Viterbo failed to score after the second inning. Kelly Sentkowski (Sr. - Plainfield, Wis.) led the V-Hawks in hitting as she drove in three runs with her triple in the second inning.
Viterbo's next contest would be the most entertaining of the weekend as the V-Hawks came out on the losing end of a 16-15 game against Waldorf College. The V-Hawks broke a 14-14 tie in the top of the seventh as Marissa Rathbun (Sr. - Rochester, Minn.) scored on a fielder's choice by Kenisha McGuire (Fr. - La Crosse, Wis.). However, the V-Hawks were unable to close out the game as Jennifer McLarney's two RBI single drove in the winning run for the Warriors. Leading the V-Hawks offensively was Betsy Ward (Jr. - River Falls, Wis.) who went 4-for-4 at the plate with a grand slam and another two-run home run giving her six RBI in the game.
The V-Hawks came out on the wrong end of another close game in their first game on Sunday against Iowa Wesleyan College. Viterbo would score two runs in the top of the seventh on a Sentkowski home run and an RBI double by Jenna Strait (Jr. La Farge, Wis.) but it would turn out to be not quite enough as Iowa Wesleyan escaped with the 8-6 victory. Hitting a home run in her only official at-bat was Ward which was her third homer of the weekend.
The fourth and final game came against Mount Mercy College as the V-Hawks lost 11-2. Viterbo was out-matched by the 14-4 Mustangs who are out to a perfect 4-0 record in MCC play. The V-Hawks trailed 4-1 after three innings but couldn't get a rally going as starting pitcher Mariah Early held the V-Hawks to just two hits. Rathbun pitched well in her 3.2 innings of relief work as she allowed just one earned run on four hits while striking out three Mustang batters.
After the weekend the V-Hawks now have a 2-16 overall record and a 0-6 MCC record. The V-Hawks will look for their first conference win this Wednesday as they play their first home game of the year against Clarke College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm at the Viterbo University Outdoor Sports Complex.
