La Crosse, Wis. - The Viterbo University Baseball team split its double-header with Saint Ambrose University on Saturday as the V-Hawks came out on top 4-0 in game one and lost 4-3 in game two.
Starting pitcher Howard Heinrich (Jr. - Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) had complete control in the first game as he earned the win pitching seven scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. Heinrich struck out six batters and now has a team-high 26 strikeouts on the season. It was also Heinrich's second straight complete game shutout as he also held Ashford scoreless last week Sunday.
The V-Hawks scored all four of their runs in the first two innings as they struck early with a two-run double by Brandon Buelow (Jr. - Milwaukee, Wis.) in the first inning. They added two more runs in the following inning as John Pogatchnik's (Holdingford, Minn.) single drove in Shane Michiels (Sr. - Green Bay, Wis.) and Andy Behnke (Jr. - Marshall, Minn.).
Game two of the double-header came down to the last at-bat as the V-Hawks trailed 4-3 but were threatening with runners on first and third. Going in to the bottom of the seventh, the V-Hawks trailed 4-1 before Brett Moravec (Jr. - Boulder City, Nev.) hit a two-run home run to close the gap to one. This is as close as the V-Hawks would get though as they were unable to drive in the potential game-tying runner on third base.
Starting pitcher Steven Mora (Jr. - Soledad, Calif.) allowed four runs in 4.1 innings of work before turning the game over to Drew Farrell (Jr. - Middleton, Wis.) who allowed just one hit in his relief appearance.
Leading the V-Hawks offensively in the two games was Pogatchnik who went 4-for-6 with two RBI while also scoring three runs. Buelow and Tupuola also had successful days at the plate as they both went 3-for-7 while Buelow added two RBI.
The loss is Viterbo's first in Midwest Collegiate Conference play as they are now 4-1 with an overall record of 12-10-1. Saint Ambrose now holds a 2-2 MCC record and a 6-10 overall record.
The rubber match of the weekend series will be tomorrow at 1:00 pm at the Viterbo University Outdoor Athletic Complex.
