La Crosse, Wis. - The Viterbo University Baseball team completed the three game series sweep against Ashford University on Sunday afternoon as the games were moved to La Crosse once again due to weather in Iowa. The V-Hawks took both games of Sunday's twin bill which gives them a perfect 3-0 record to start Midwest Collegiate Conference play.
The V-Hawks took the first game 6-0 as all of Viterbo's runs were scored in the first two innings. Viterbo scored five runs in the first inning due in large part to three Ashford errors. Ashford would go on to commit five errors in the game as they were also held to just three hits.
Starting pitcher Howard Heinrich (Jr. - Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) pitched all seven innings for Viterbo allowing just three hits while striking out eight Ashford batters. The leading hitters for Viterbo were Brett Moravec (Jr. - Boulder City, Nev.) and Nick Lenzendorf (Sr. - Eastman, Wis.) who each drove in two RBI in game one.
Viterbo took game number two by the score of 9-3 as the team collected 14 hits en route to the three game weekend sweep of Ashford. Brandon Buelow (Jr. - Milwaukee, Wis.) and Eli Tupuola (Sr. - San Diego, Calif.) both enjoyed successful days at the plate as they each went 3-for-4 with three RBI.
After scoring one run in each the second and third innings, the V-Hawks scored two runs in the fourth as Tupuola drove in a run with a double to left center and was later driven in by Justin Daniels (Jr. - Holmen, Wis.) who reached on a fielder's choice.
Earning the win for the V-Hawks was starting pitcher Steven Mora (Jr. - Soledad, Calif.) who pitched six innings allowing five hits and three runs. Mora went on to strike out three Ashford batters before turning the six run lead over to Blake Shepherd (So. - Mindoro, Wis.) for the final inning.
The win moves Viterbo to 9-9-1 overall with a perfect 3-0 MCC record. Ashford falls to 2-15 overall and 0-3 in MCC play. Viterbo's next action will come this Friday as the team hosts its official home opener with a double header against Northland College. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm at the Viterbo University Outdoor Sports Complex.
