Lebanon, Tenn. - The Viterbo University Baseball team opened up their 2010 season this past weekend with six games in Lebanon, Tennessee. The team went 1-5 on the road trip with their lone win highlighted by a walk-off home run.
The V-Hawks faced both Missouri Baptist College and Cumberland University in three-game series'. Viterbo opened their first game against Missouri Baptist as they fell short 5-3. However they were able to come away with a 9-7 victory in game two of the double-header thanks to a two-run walk-off home run by Brandon Buelow (Jr. - Milwaukee, Wis.) in the bottom of the eighth inning. The V-Hawks would go on to lose their next game against Missouri Baptist 13-0 before being swept by Cumberland University.
The walk-off home run was set up in the eighth inning when leadoff hitter Joey Bergles (Jr. - Geneseo, Ill.) was hit by a pitch before being moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by John Pogatchnik (Sr. - Holdingford, Minn.). Beulow took care of the rest as he drove the ball over the left field fence giving the V-Hawks the 9-7 victory. Kyle Dreger (Sr. - Manitowoc, Wis.) earned the win for the V-Hawks as he pitched the final 1.2 innings allowing two hits while striking out one batter.
The leading hitter for the V-Hawks over the weekend was Brett Rettenmeier (Jr. - Cedar Rapids, Iowa) who went 6-of-12 with two doubles and two RBI's. Buelow also had a successful weekend from the plate hitting .471 with a home run and four RBI's. Driving in three runs apiece was Brett Moravec (Jr. - Boulder City, Nev.) and Nick Lenzendorf (Sr. - Eastman, Wis.). Lenzendorf also added a team-high three doubles.
The V-Hawks return to action March 8th as they travel to West Palm Beach, Florida to face Northwood University. The trip to Florida over spring break will include six games against three teams. The teams include: Northwood University, Saint Thomas University, and Florida Memorial College.
