La Crosse, Wis. - The Saint Ambrose Queen Bees defeated the Viterbo University Women's Basketball team by the score of 60-48 on Saturday afternoon at the R.W. Beggs Sr. Gymnasium. Junior forward Ali Dolphin of the Queen Bees flirted with a quadruple-double in an impressive performance.
The Queen Bees opened the game with a 10-0 scoring run as senior guard Jenny Clark scored a quick nine points, all coming from behind the three point line. Saint Ambrose would go on to make four more three pointers in the half in which 24 of their 33 shots came from behind the arc. Led by eight points by Sally Colby (So. - Hartland, Wis.), the V-Hawks would go into halftime trailing the Queen Bees by the score of 28-18.
The V-Hawks were able to cut the lead to six with 7:30 remaining in the second half after five consecutive points by freshman Sami Weaver (Trempealeau, Wis.). However, turnovers haunted the V-Hawks throughout the game and made it impossible to mount the comeback. Dolphin did her fair share for the Queen Bees in helping force the 31 turnovers committed by the V-Hawks as she finished the game with eight steals. Along with her eight steals, she finished the game with 11 points, eight assists, and nine rebounds.
The leading scorer for Saint Ambrose was Clark who finished the game with 17 points including five three pointers. The V-Hawks had two players score in double figures with freshman Dani Templin (Richland Center, Wis.) leading the way with 13 points. Joni Stanek went 5-11 from the field and finished with 10 points.
The V-Hawks outshot (39.1% - 34.8%) and out rebounded (44-31) the Queen Bees but were not near as efficient holding on to the ball. Saint Ambrose committed just 14 turnovers compared to the 31 by the V-Hawks.
With the loss, the V-Hawks fall to 6-20 on the season with a 2-10 Midwest Collegiate Conference record. Saint Ambrose improves to 20-7 overall and 8-5 in the MCC. The V-Hawks will next be in action Wednesday night as they travel to Forest City, Iowa to take on Waldorf College.
