Volleyball - Fri, Oct. 6, 2017

La Crosse, Wis. – After a slow start in the first set, the Viterbo University volleyball team got a rhythm going offensively and cruised to a 26-24, 25-12, 25-21 victory over Dakota State University.

Dakota State matched Viterbo point for point in the first set as they forced Viterbo to earn every point and induced 10 Viterbo unforced errors. Viterbo would take a 22-17 lead but Dakota State eventually tied the game up at 24. Viterbo would get a kill from Katie Frohmader (FR/Fort Atkinson, Wis.) and Natalie Geidel (SR/West Bend, Wis.) to secure the 26-24 first set win. Offensively, the V-Hawks finished the first set with 19 kills while Dakota State was limited to just 11 kills.

The second set saw the V-Hawks jump out to a 10-3 lead and never allowed the Trojans to get any closer than six the rest of the way. Viterbo once again had a balanced offensive attack and finished with 17 kills and an efficient .433 hitting percentage. Defensively, Viterbo limited Dakota State to just four kills in the second set and a .000 hitting percentage.

Viterbo would once again jump to an early lead (10-4) in the first set as they scored ten of the first fourteen points. Dakota State would not go away quietly though as they slowly chipped away at their deficit and eventually pulled within 21-17. That would be as close as the Trojans would get as Viterbo closed out the third set for a 25-21 win.

For the match, Viterbo finished with twice as many kills as Dakota State as the V-Hawks had 54 kills and the Trojans were limited to 26. Leading the way for the V-Hawks was Hannah Erickson (JR/Holmen, Wis.) with 12 kills while Natalie Geidel and Miah Garant (FR/Fort Atkinson, Wis.) each added 9. Samantha Sell led the Trojans with seven kills. Senior Amelia Grahn (SR/Madison, Wis.) had a great all-around game as she finished with 40 assists, 5 kills, 9 digs and 2 blocks. Baylee Gross (SR/West Bend, Wis.) led the V-Hawk defense with 15 digs while Jazmayne Williams led the Trojans with seven digs. As a team, Viterbo hit .307 and marks the fourth time in five matches that have finished with a hitting percentage of .300 or higher.

The win improves the V-Hawks of Viterbo University to 19-0 overall and 6-0 in North Star Athletic Association action. The loss drops Dakota State University to 3-15 on the year and 2-4 in conference play. Viterbo will continue NSAA action on Saturday when they host Presentation College at 2:00 pm.
