Kansas City, Mo. – For just the second time in school history, the Viterbo University volleyball team has earned the top spot in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Top-25 Poll. With their perfect start at 17-0, the V-Hawks volleyball team found themselves staring down at everyone, claiming the top spot in the third regular season poll.

Viterbo has fought off every challenge in their way thus far, starting the year unblemished through 17 matches. The V-Hawks earned 588 points including 17 of 21 first place votes in the third edition of the poll. Along the way, Viterbo has knocked off eight teams receiving votes or better including three teams in the top 10.

For the season, the V-Hawks have had a very balanced offensive and defensive performance. Offensively, the V-Hawks are averaging an NAIA fourth best 14.6 kills per set with a .272 hitting percentage (6th in NAIA). Defensively, Viterbo is averaging 2.63 blocks per set which ranks fourth in the NAIA

"I think it is an exciting thing for the community, the university and especially our girls- we have played well this far and have been recognized for it," commented Head Coach Ryan DeLong. "There are not a lot of teams out there that say they have been ranked number one, so it's definitely an accomplishment for the girls. We know though there is a lot of volleyball left and many good teams out there, so we need to keep working and trying to get better each day. Ultimately, we want to be playing our best volleyball in November and December.

The No. 1 ranking is just the second for any program in school history, as the volleyball team was also ranked #1 back in the 2015 season. The #1 ranking will be tested the next time the V-Hawks are in action as they host #7 ranked Dordt College on Thursday night. The game is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
