La Crosse, Wis. – The Viterbo University volleyball team found a way to overcome a scrappy UW-La Crosse team to win 22-25, 25-18, 25-14, 19-25 15-7 to claim the Coulee Cup for the tenth consecutive season.

Viterbo jumped out to a commanding 15-6 lead in the first set but UW-La Crosse did not panic as they fought their way back. The Eagles outscored the V-Hawks 19-7 to claim the first set 25-22. The second set saw the V-Hawks trailing 6-5 before they went on a 10-6 run to take a 15-11 lead. UW-La Crosse again battled back to pull within 19-17 but Viterbo scored six of the next 7 points to win 25-18.

The third set belonged to the V-Hawks as they jumped out to a 6-2 lead and did not let the Eagles get any closer the rest of the way. In the third set, the V-Hawks offense was clean as they finished with 10 kills and no errors for a .476 hitting percentage. With the fourth set tied at 12, UW-La Crosse scored the next four points and did not allow Viterbo to get any closer than three the rest of the way to set up a fifth and deciding set.

The fifth set started out with both teams exchanging points before Viterbo took control. Senior Amelia Grahn (SR/Madison, Wis.) got the V-Hawks going as she served eight straight to put Viterbo up 12-6. UW-La Crosse was never able to recover as Viterbo won the fifth set 15-7.  

For the match, the V-Hawks had four players in double figures led by Natalie Geidel (SR/West Bend, Wis.) with 15 kills while Siera Skow (SR/Hartford, Wis.) had 13, Aubrey Aspen (JR/Sparta, Wis.) had 11 and Maya Roberts (FR/Watertown, Wis.) had 10. Setting up the offense for the V-Hawks was Grahn who finished with a match high 46 assists. Grahn also had 13 digs for yet another double-double for her while Baylee Gross (SR/West Bend, Wis.) had a team high 20 digs. Viterbo dominated at the net as they finished with 18 total blocks including three solo and nine assisted blocks from Aspen. Marisa Johnson led the Eagles with 15 kills while Stephanie Henk finished with 14.

The win improves the V-Hawks to 8-0 overall and extends their win streak over UW-La Crosse to ten in a row (2008). UW-La Crosse falls to 4-1 on the year. Viterbo will be back in action next when they host the Holiday Inn Express Invitational this Friday and Saturday. Play starts at 2:00 pm on Friday with Viterbo playing Aquinas College while play starts at 10:00 am on Saturday.
