Columbia, Mo. – Senior Amelia Grahn (SR/Madison, Wis.) and Head Coach Ryan DeLong each reached milestones this weekend to help Viterbo University to a 4-0 weekend at the Columbia College Tournament. 

In the first match of the weekend, Grahn recorded 48 assists to help the V-Hawks earn a come from behind win over #3 Park University 25-15, 22-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-11. The 48 assists helped Grahn surpass the school's all-time assist record which was previously set at 3,677 by Brianna Brinkman (2011-2014). The win also helped Coach DeLong win his 400th match which have all come at Viterbo University. In his 13th season, DeLong moves into 15th place on the NAIA Winningest Active coaches list with a record of 403-126 (.762).

Also in the win over Park, senior Natalie Geidel (SR/West Bend, Wis.) led Viterbo with a 22 kill performance and a.422 hitting percentage while freshman Maya Roberts (FR/Watertown, Wis.) added 12 kills. Geidel also added a solo block and 7 assisted blocks while Aubrey Aspen (JR/Sparta, Wis.) and Grahn eached chipped in with six assisted blocks. Senior Baylee Gross (SR/West Bend, Wis.) finished with 22 digs while Grahn had 12 digs to contribute to yet another double double on the season.

In Viterbo's second match of the weekend, the V-Hawks yet again found themselves in a deficit as they dropped the first two sets to #12 Missouri Baptist University (25-23, 25-23). After two error filled sets, the V-Hawks finally got their offense going in the third set as Geidel, Roberts and Siera Skow (SR/Hartford, Wis.) each had four kills to lead Viterbo to a 25-16 win. It was all Viterbo in the fourth set as they took control early and won the set 25-13. The fifth set was back and forth with neither team really taking control. Geidel recorded two of her 17 kills in the final two points to win the fifth set 15-13.

Grahn was again simply amazing for the V-Hawks as she finished with a stat line of 45 assists, 5 kills, 8 digs, 8 assisted blocks and a solo block. Joining Geidel in double digits was Roberts and Skow with 11 kills while Aspen had 10 kills. Geidel also had a solo block and 11 assisted blocks while Gross finished with 24 digs to lead the V-Hawk defense.

Day 2 of the Columbia College Tournament got off to a better start for the V-Hawks as they cruised to a 25-10, 25-11, 25-17 win over Friends University. Coach DeLong used the opportunity to get the whole roster some playing time as all 16 players saw the floor. Freshman Katie Frohmader (FR/Fort Atkinson, Wis.) led the V-Hawk offense with 10 kills while junior Gabi Gomez (JR/Oakdale, Minn.) led the defense with 11 digs. Grahn finished with 18 assists while Chloe Jakscht (SO/East Troy, Wis.) finished with 13 assists.

The fourth and final match of the weekend saw the V-Hawks take on host and #8 ranked Columbia College. In the first set, the V-Hawks broke away from the Cougars midway through as they cruised to a 25-17 win. The second set was back and forth as both teams would take control before Viterbo scored the final two points to win the second set 26-24. Viterbo was pushed to earn every point as they recorded 20 kills including six from Geidel and four from Skow and Frohmader. The third set saw Aspen and Geidel combine for 11 kills and no errors in 16 attempts to lead the V-Hawks to a 25-22 match deciding win.

For the match, Geidel finished with 13 kills while Skow and Aspen had 12 and 11 respectively. As a team, the V-Hawks hit an impressive .301 for the match including committing just 3 errors in the first set and 2 errors in the third set. Grahn once again had a double-double as she finished with 39 assists and 14 digs. Gross led the defense with her third 20+ dig performance.

Viterbo finishes the weekend a perfect 4-0 and improves to 7-0 overall. Viterbo is now 6-0 against teams ranked in the top-25 including 4-0 against teams in the top 10. Viterbo will be in action next when they host UW-La Crosse in the annual Coulee Cup on Wednesday, September 6th at 7:00 pm.
