La Crosse, Wis. – After giving up three first half goals yesterday, Viterbo University reversed the trend today as they scored three opening period goals and held on for a 3-2 win over Clarke University.

The V-Hawks of Viterbo University got on the board first in the 16th minute as Kogiso Gilmar scored his first goal of the season on an assist by Sebastian Flores (SR/Caracas, Venezuela). Viterbo would keep the pressure on the Clarke defense and would break through again in the 33rd minute. Kaden Bergman (FR/Hayward, Wis.) would get a cross pass and take a shot but Clarke goalie Michael Lubahn would make a great save. But the ball deflected off the goalie and right back at Bergman's feet. Bergman would then find the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

With Vitebo applying more pressure, Clarke fouled the V-Hawks in the penalty kick and was awarded a penalty kick. Gilmar was called upon to take the penalty kick and he went opposite of Lubahn to put the V-Hawks up 3-0. Clarke would get one of the goals back as they scored in the 43rd minute on a Jose Ruiz score and an assist from Trevor Kennedy.

Clarke came out applying the pressure in the second half and pulled within a goal when they scored in the 59th minute. Riley Michaud scored for the Pride as he took a pass from Rio Athwal.  Although that was the final goal of the game, both teams had plenty of opportunities down the stretch. Viterbo's final chance to add an insurance goal came in the 85th minute as Jon Carli (SR/Chippewa Falls, Wis.) ripped off a shot but he was turned away by Lubah.

Viterbo University finished the game with a 13-9 edge in shots including a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. Ben Kellner (JR/Rochester, Minn.) played the first half in goal for the V-Hawks and recorded two saves while Nate Regas (SO/Duluth, Minn.) played the final 45 minutes in goal and stopped one shot. Lubahn finished with four saves for Clarke University. Gilmar led the V-Hawks with four shots including three on goal while Bergman finished with two shots on goal.

The win moves the V-Hawks to 1-2 on the year while the Pride fall to 0-2 overall. Viterbo will be back in action on Friday, September 1st when they host Augsburg College at 3:00 pm.
