Game 2
Martin Luther College
Softball - Thu, Apr. 27, 2017

LA CROSSE, Wis. – With one last home doubleheader, the Viterbo University softball team had a chance to leave the fans with a couple of victories. The V-Hawks did just that as they used some late home runs to seal a sweep over Martin Luther College 10-2 and 9-8.

-The second inning was full of action as both teams put up a pair of runs. After the Knights scored two, Viterbo responded led by a leadoff home run from Bailey Thur (SO/Yorkville, Wis.).

-From there, Kayla McInerney (SR/Taconite, Minn.) took care of business in the circle on Senior Day as she didn't allow a hit the rest of the way. McInerney struck out a season-high nine.

-In the sixth, the Viterbo bats came alive. Up 5-2, Thur ripped her second homer of the day, clearing the bases for a 9-2 advantage. After three straight singles, Abbi Strait (FR/La Farge, Wis.) then drew a walk to bring in Abigail Giese (FR/Hager City, Wis.) and end the game 10-2.

-In game two, MLC held the advantage through two and a half innings as they scored a pair in the first.

-Viterbo cashed in once in the first and scored two more in the third after Elli Anderson (FR/Minneapolis, Minn.) hit a sacrifice fly and Giese brought in another on a fielder's choice.

-The V-Hawks added three more in the fourth led by Hannah Ludescher (FR/Tony, Wis.)'s two run shot before tacking on three more insurance runs in the sixth on a Giese home run.

-The Knights trailed 9-4 in the seventh with the bases loaded before Aubrey Timm closed the gap to one with a grand slam.

-Sarah Obert (SO/La Crosse, Wis.) would close the door, however, as she forced Rebecca Doering to ground out to second base to seal the sweep.

-The V-Hawks hit .397 as a team and received multiple hits from eight different players. Obert led Viterbo with four hits total.

-Viterbo once again used the long ball to put up runs, hitting four homers. Thur finished 3-for-6 with two of the home runs and five RBIs.

-Giese totaled three hits including one double and one homer while Kelsey Ludwig (SO/Mosinee, Wis.) added two extra-base hits with a double and a triple.

-With a line of 4.0 innings pitched, one earned run, four hits allowed, an two strikeouts, Caitlyn Kozik (SO/Marshfield, Wis.) earned the victory in game two.

-McInerney picked up the first victory on her Senior Day as she scattered just three hits and no earned runs while striking out a season-high nine.

The V-Hawks head to Dickinson, N.D. as they take on Dickinson State University to close the regular season. Game one of the four-game series will take place on April 29 at 2:00 p.m.
