LA CROSSE, Wis. – After a pair of non-conference doubleheaders, the Viterbo University softball team returned to North Star Athletic Association competition and picked up right where they left off. The V-Hawks scored 22 runs on 24 hits as they swept Waldorf University 10-3 and 12-8.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-After Waldorf opened the game with a run in the first, Tessa DeSmith (SO/South St. Paul, Minn.) knotted the game with a sacrifice fly to center field.
-The Warriors put up two more in the fourth and limited the V-Hawks chances until the bottom of the sixth inning when Viterbo exploded.
-Viterbo ripped seven hits on their way to scoring nine runs in the frame, led by two hits and a pair of RBIs from Abigail Giese (FR/Hager City, Wis.).
-Bailey Thur (SO/Yorkville, Wis.) allowed just one hit in the circle in the seventh as she earned her third victory of the year.
-The Warriors again pushed across runs early as they plated four in the first inning of game two.
-Viterbo was all over the ball immediately, however, as they responded with five runs in both the first and second innings.
-In the third, the Warriors closed the gap to 10-7 but two more runs in the third and fourth put Viterbo up 12-8 through four frames.
-Kayla McInerney (SR/Taconite, Minn.) stepped on the rubber for Viterbo in the fifth and worked two perfect frames before the game was called due to darkness.
