Men's Basketball - Thu, Feb. 23, 2017

LA CROSSE, Wis. – Riding a five game winning streak into the North Star Athletic Association Tournament, the Viterbo University men's basketball team seemed to be getting hot at the right time. On Thursday night, however, they struggled offensively as they fell 56-52 to Dakota State University in the first round of the NSAA Tournament.

-Viterbo had a tough time from beyond the arc and at the line in the first half as they converted just one triple and one free throw.

-The V-Hawks had opportunities, but went just 1-for-8 at the charity stripe.

-The V-Hawks hit 44 percent of their field goals but Dakota State connected on 46.9 percent of their shots including five triples to pull ahead 37-24 at the break.

-In the second half, Viterbo opened up with a solid 20-8 run to pull within one, but could never quite get over the hump.

-A pair of Dakota State jumpers had the visitors back up five but Jake Bamke (SR/Hortonville, Wis.) kept the V-Hawks close with a layup and two free throws.

-Up three with 1:48 left, the Trojans hit a triple to go up six, deflating Viterbo. Erik Engelstad (SR/Cambridge, Wis.) responded with a layup, but that was all the V-Hawks would get as they fell 56-52.

-Engelstad reeled in a season-high 15 rebounds to go along with 10 points as he registered his first double-double of the season,

-Bamke finished with a team-high 16 points as he hit five of his seven free throw attempts.

-Viterbo shot just 39.6 percent as a team compared to Dakota State's 42.6 percent.

-Both Jared Fleischmann (JR/Marshfield, Wis.) and Austin Poehls (JR/Cadott, Wis.) dished out six assists for the V-Hawks.

-Ian Barse finished with 17 points for Dakota State while Kyle Kilgore added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

-The 18 victories this season were the most for Viterbo since the 2004-05 season.

-Viterbo will graduate a pair of seniors in Bamke and Engelstad.
