La Crosse, Wis. - Junior Jamie Robertson (Langho, England) scored on a penalty kick in the 103rd minute to lead #2 Viterbo University to a 1-0 win over #7 William Penn University in the Midwest Collegiate Conference Quarterfinals. Viterbo advances to the MCC semifinals for the second straight season next Sunday at 2:00 pm.
With the game getting very physical and the level of intensity consistently getting higher, the game entered its second overtime. Three minutes into the second overtime, Viterbo received a monstrous break as William Penn was whistled for a hard foul from behind inside the V-Hawks penalty box. The call led to Viterbo receiving a penalty kick which Robertson stepped up and put past Statesmen goalie, Tadeo Cavazos.
Although William Penn was a much lower seed then the V-Hawks, the Satesmen kept the V-Hawks in check for much of the game. The V-Hawks outshot the Statesmen 15-5 for the game but were unable to capitalize on numerous scoring opportunities earlier in the contest. Both teams had excellent opportunities in the first overtime but were unsuccessful. First, Viterbo's Tom Snow (Sr. - North Brooks, Ill.) had a one-on-one opportunity with Cavazos but put the ball wide right. Then the Statesmen had their chance but found the post instead of the net and the V-Hawks were able to clear the rebound.
Viterbo had a marginal 6-5 advantage in corner kicks while William Penn committed 14 fouls to Viterbo's 9. Freshman Josh Lines (Bristol, England) recorded his eighth shutout of the season as he finished with two saves. Although Lines gets credit for the shutout, the V-Hawk defense as a whole should get the credit. The V-Hawk defense held MCC leading scorer Nik Rule to just two shots on the day. Cavazos finished with five saves for the Statesmen.
The V-Hawks have now won four straight games and have not lost (7-0-1) since losing 2-1 in overtime to MCC champion Ashford University on September 28. The V-Hawks are now 11-5-2 overall, their most wins in a single season since winning 16 games in 1999. The Statesmen season comes to an end with a final record of 7-9-1. The V-Hawks await the result of the #3 Grand View University/#6 Iowa Wesleyan College contest to see whom they play next Sunday. Viterbo defeated GVU 2-0 in the final regular season game and defeated IWC 4-2.
