La Crosse, Wis. - It had been eight years since the Viterbo men's soccer team had defeated Grand View University. On Saturday, the V-Hawks ended that streak as they defeated the Vikings 2-0 in the final Midwest Collegiate Conference regular season game of 2009.
In a very physical game, Viterbo got an early break as Grand View was whistled for a foul in the penalty box. Viterbo's James Lockley (So. - Manchester, England) stepped up to take his fourth penalty kick of the season. Like the other three Lockley has taken this season, he was able to put it past the goalie and put the V-Hawks on the board first in the 12th minute of the game. Grand View would definitely have plenty of scoring opportunities (9) in the first half but would not find the net as the game entered intermission 1-0.
The second half was much the same as the first as each team would try to use physical play to take the upper hand. The V-Hawks would take advantage of a scoring opportunity in the 65th minute. V-Hawk substitute Jake Wenzel (Fr. - Stoughton, Wis.) took a beautiful pass from Jamie Robertson (Jr. - Langho, England) and put it past Vikings Goalie, Darren Martin. The goal was Wenzel's third of the season while it was Robertson's seventh assist of the season. Grand View would again out shoot Viterbo in the second half but could not get past the stingy V-Hawk defense.
In the end, Grand View had a 15-6 advantage in shots but it was Viterbo that was able to have success with their limited opportunities. Grand View also had a 5- 4 advantage in corner kicks while each team committed 19 fouls. Viterbo's goalie Josh Lines (Fr. - Bristol, England) recorded his seventh shutout of the season and finished with eight saves. Robertson's assist on Wenzel's goal was his 31st point of the season as he finishes the regular season second in points in the MCC.
Grand View falls to 10-5-2 overall and 6-1-1 in conference play. The win improves the V-Hawks to 10-5-2 overall and 6-1-1 in MCC play. The conference record guarantees the V-Hawks at least the #2 seed in the MCC tournament as they await the outcome of the Ashford vs. Clarke game on Sunday. An Ashford loss or tie would give Viterbo a share of their first MCC regular season title since 1999 and the #1 seed in the MCC tournament. Viterbo will be in action next when they host a first round MCC tournament game on Sunday, November 1, 2009. Opponent and game time to be determined on Sunday, October 25, 2009.
