La Crosse, Wis. - Charlie Grill (So. - Gleason, Wis.) put Viterbo University on the board in the third minute of the contest and the V-Hawks would hold on for a 4-2 win over Midwest Collegiate Conference foe Iowa Wesleyan College.
In the third minute, Grill received a perfect crossing pass from Tony Madigan (Jr. - Dane, Wis.) and scored his second goal of the season. Viterbo would then benefit from an Iowa Wesleyan hand ball inside the penalty box giving the V-Hawks a penalty kick. Sophomore James Lockley (Manchester, England) stepped up to take the penalty kick and put it in the left corner of the goal as the Tigers goalie dove right. The V-Hawks would then take complete control of the contest as they scored their third goal of the opening period. In the 40th minute, Madigan would receive a pass from junior Jamie Robertson (Langho, England) and score his eighth goal of the season.
The Tigers would finally get on the board in the 57th minute on a goal by Levor Henry and an assist by Jesus Soto. Viterbo would answer right back and insert complete control of the game when Robertson scored his team leading 12th goal of the season to give the V-Hawks a 4-1 lead. Robertson is now tied for the MCC lead in goals and is tops in the league in points with 30. Iowa Wesleyan would capitalize on one more scoring opportunity as they received a penalty kick in the 70th minute. Michael Roberts took lessons from Lockley as he went opposite of V-Hawk goalie to pull the Tigers within 4-2. But that would be all the Tigers would get as the V-Hawks defense locked down.
In a very well balanced statistical game, the Tigers had an 11-10 advantage in shots as well as a 7-3 difference in corner kicks. Madigan and Robertson each finished with three shots to lead the V-Hawk offense. Freshman Josh Lines (Bristol, England) played all 90 minutes in goal for the V-Hawks and recorded four saves while Tigers goalie Troy Osborne finished with three.
The loss drops the Tigers to 5-12 overall and 3-4 in MCC play. The win keeps the V-Hawks in contention of their first MCC title since 1999 as they are now 5-1-1 in conference play and 9-5-2 overall. They are one game back of league leading Grand View University whom they finish the regular season with on Saturday at 1:00 pm. The V-Hawks are hopeful that they can take advantage of playing on their home turf and beat Grand View for the first time in over 10 years.
