La Crosse, Wis. - Freshman Emily Williamson (Rochester, Minn.) scored a goal and assisted on another to help lead Viterbo University to a 2-0 win over William Penn University in Midwest Collegiate Conference play.
Fighting rainy weather and wet field conditions, Viterbo got on the board first in the 66th minute on a goal by Lauren Neet (Fr. - Plover, Wis.). The goal was set-up by Williamson as her shot was saved by William Penn goalie Kristen Dolen but she was unable to keep control as Neet put the ball in the net. It is Neet's sixth goal of the season which ties for the team lead with Rita Rabb (Fr. - La Crosse, Wis.). Viterbo would then get an insurance goal by Williamson in the 88th minute of the contest. A Statesman foul set-up Williamson's goal as she received a direct kick; which she put past Statesmen goalie Katie Burnett.
Both teams had limited scoring opportunities in the first half as the game was tied 0-0 at the break. Viterbo had a 5-2 advantage in shots in the first half and finished with an 11-8 overall advantage. Viterbo also had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Williamson and freshman Hannah Pollack (La Crosse, Wis.) led the V-Hawks with three shots apiece. Sophomore Stephanie Stacey (New Berlin, Wis.) saved five shots for her second shutout of the season.
Viterbo improves to 5-8 overall and evens their MCC record at 2-2 on the season. William Penn University falls to 4-5-1 overall and 1-2-1 in conference action. Viterbo will be in action next when they host Waldorf College on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at 3:00 pm.
