West Salem, Wis. - Luther College used a 27-13 advantage in shots to help them to a 2-0 non-conference win over Viterbo University.
Both teams had scoring opportunities early in the first half but were unable to capitalize until the 30th minute. That's when the Norse took advantage of an unlucky bounce for the V-Hawks and scored the first goal of the game. Anna Grinde was the one responsible for the goal to give the Norse a 1-0 lead. Viterbo would battle tough and give themselves chances to score but were not able to get past Luther's goalie, Hannah Wright. The game entered the break still 1-0 Luther College.
The second half was much the same as the first half as the score did not change over the first 25 minutes. Then Paige Ofstedahl was able to find the back of the net for the Norse and give Luther a 2-0 advantage. Viterbo would not go away and kept pestering the Norse to no luck as they could not capitalize on their scoring opportunities. Viterbo forced Luther's goalie to make five saves in the second half.
The V-Hawks had a very balanced attack as six different players recorded a shot including Lauren Turinett (Fr. - Wausau, Wis.) who led the V-Hawks with four of them. Sophomore Stephanie Stacey (New Berlin, Wis.) finished the game with 12 saves including 8 in the first half. Dani Meirick and Ofstedahl led the Norse with seven shots apiece while Wright finished with six saves.
The loss drops the V-Hawks to 3-6 overall while the Norse improve to 3-3 on the season. Viterbo will be in action next when they open the Midwest Collegiate Conference schedule on Saturday against St. Ambrose University. The game will be played in Davenport, Iowa and is scheduled to start at 1:00 pm.
