La Crosse, Wis. - The Viterbo University Men's golf team dropped its opening match of the 2009-10 season in a tight battle with Winona State University in the fall version of the Cedar Creek Invitational. WSU edged the V-Hawks 298-301.
Viterbo was led by Derrick Meier (Jr. - Chilton, Wis.) and Shawn Keenan (Fr. - Embden, Maine). Meier shot a one over par 71, while Keenan finished with a 72. Freshman Billy Pearse (Holmen, Wis.) was next with a 75. Jason Jorgensen (So. - Onalaska, Wis.) shot an 81 while Josh Kohnhorst (So. - Tomah, Wis.) carded an 83.
"We really played very well as a team for 14 or 15 holes, but we struggled down the stretch. I don't expect that to happen too often with this group," said head coach Jim Socha. "I'm very optimistic about what this team can accomplish this season."
Next action for the V-Hawks is the Grand View Invitational September 8-9.
