
La Crosse, Wis. - The Viterbo University Men's soccer team used a consistent offensive attack to lead them to a 3-0 victory over Holy Cross College.
Unlike Friday night, it took the V-Hawks most of the first half to break through the Saints defense. Junior Tony Madigan (Dane, Wis.) finally put the V-Hawks on the board when he took an assist from Chris Bagshaw (So. - Winona, Minn.) and found the back of the net.The game remained 1-0 at the break as Viterbo had a slight 4-3 advantage in shots.
The V-Hawks increased the pressure early in the second half and freshman Jake Wenzel (Stoughton, Wis.) broke through the Saints defense to give the V-Hawks a 2-0 lead. Sophomore James Lockley (Manchester, England) recorded his second assist of the season on the goal. The V-Hawks would then get a break when the Saints were whistled for a hand ball inside the penalty. The result was a chance for a penalty kick which Lockley put past Saints goalie Damian Marciniak. The V-Hawks would have a few more chances down the stretch but were forced to settle with a 3-0 victory.
It is the second straight game that freshman Josh Lines (Bristol, England) and the V-Hawk defense recorded a shutout, the V-Hawks shutout the University of Sioux Falls 6-0 on last Friday night. Viterbo finished the game with a 12-5 advantage in shots and had a 8-1 advantage in corner kick. Marciniak finished with five saves while Lines had three saves for the V-Hawks.
The win improves the V-Hawks to 2-0 on the season while the Saints fall to 0-3 overall. The V-Hawks have now scored nine goals on the season well ahead of last season's pace when they scored 26 goals all season. Viterbo will be in action next when they travel to Kenosha, Wis. on Friday to take on Carthage College in the Battle on the Border tournament.
Women's game: The V-Hawk women also played the Saints of Holy Cross College today. Unfortunately for the V-Hawks, there game was cut short due to the Saints having to forfeit the contest at halftime. The Lady Saints are in their inaugural season and have just 13 players on the roster. Due to injuries, the Saints were unable to field a team in the second half. The game was halted with the V-Hawks leading 2-0 as junior Anastasia Jensen (Anoka, Minn.) scored the first two goals of her V-Hawk career.
Although the stats do not count for the contest, the V-Hawks do earn their first victory of the season as they are now 1-3 on the year, Holy Cross falls to 0-2 overall. The Lady V-Hawks will also travel to Kenosha, Wis. on Friday to play Concordia University in the Battle on the Border tournament.
