Hutchinson, Kansas – Making their first ever appearance in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Championship Opening Round, the #5 seed Viterbo University baseball team did not show any inexperience and quite frankly showed they belong as they defeated #4 Mayville State University 7-0.

As it has been all season for the V-Hawks, it was their pitching that established the tone early and led the way as V-Hawk senior Ben O'Reilly (SR/Rochester, Minn.) threw a complete game three hitter to earn his fifth straight and eighth win of the season. O'Reilly stuck out eight while walking three in nine innings of work.

The V-Hawk offense first got on the scoreboard in the third inning as Matt Watkins (SR/San Carlos, Calif.) drove in a run with a single. Taylor Reinhardt (JR/Medford, Wis.) singled to lead off the fourth inning and advanced to third on a single by Francisco Torres (SR/Cathedral City, Calif.). Reinhardt then scored on a groundout by Pierce Belaustegui (SR/Henderson, Nev.). Watkins then drove in his second run of the game with a single in the fifth inning to put the V-Hawks up 3-0. Viterbo would then break the game open in the sixth and seventh inning by scoring two runs in each. Torres came up with the big hit in the sixth as he drove in a run with his second triple of the season.

Offensively, the V-Hawks were led by Torres who finished 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Watkins was 2-4 with two RBI's. Reinhardt and Pupillo also finished with multi-hit games while scoring two runs apiece.

The win moves the V-Hawks to 32-18 on the season as they advance on in the winner's bracket of the five team double elimination tournament. Viterbo University now faces #1 seed and 10th ranked overall Tabor College at 7:30 pm tonight. The 32 wins for the V-Hawks this season ties the school's single season record.
